A couple of major Thunder Bay fundraising campaigns are reporting some disappointing returns.

Thunder Bay United Way officials say they've brought in just over $1.3 million so far for this year’s fundraising effort. And with just four weeks left in the campaign, that total is less than half of the $2.7 million target.

Similarly, the Salvation Army says it's Christmas Kettle Campaign has brought in just under $40,000, which is.about $13,000 below the total raised by this time last year.

It also leaves them well short of their $170,000 overall target.

Both campaigns are urging people to make their donations today to help ensure they reach their goals.

I fully support charitable organizations such as the United Way and the Salvation army, but I have to wonder whether they set their goals too high. Historically, this city is full of philanthropists willing to donate to worthy causes, but that doesn't mean that organizations looking to tap into that generosity can come back from one year to the next asking for more and more and more. Perhaps going forward, set a more modest goal and if you happen to exceed then great....more to go around. I suspect that the United Way and all of the organizations that it supports will fall on lean times this year. Unfortunate, but completely unavoidable if everyone starts to tighten up expectations.

It might be easier to reach those goals if so many organizations were not competing for charity donations, or asked for volunteers instead of money (ie, gift wrapping volunteers, christmas dinner volunteers, operation red nose)

Unforunatley things such as increased water, hydro and tax bills are straining a lot of people and lots simply don't have the means to donate when they may have before. With the spending addicts still in charge of council don't expect this to change anytime soon.

So to all you people out there that think Thunder Bay is a booming city, what do you have to say now? It is obvious we do not have the disposable income required to support these organizations, as too many people are now reliant on them.

It's just not the Christmas season without the United Way saying they're short on donations. Like clockwork.

With City Council funding every special interest group and social group who is asking for money people in Tbay probably feel that they don't need to support charities or they know there's a massive tax hike coming to pay for these expenditures and are saving for that day .

The will to give is there but as time goes on, for the majority, it's not possible anymore.

Just because they have a "TARGET" it doesn't mean they have to reach it.
I'm not a scrooge, but I'm getting tired of giving when everyone/everything else, just keeps taking more and more of my paycheck.

I haven't donated to the united way since I found out how much money the CEO makes. That's sick.

have to agree with nvjgu on this one, like to know how many other charities where the admin
takes more than it should? so what amount actually gets to the charities involved??
money is for the children isn't it??

The donation figures are always lowballed at this time of year. The City employee and other donations are always added at the end of the campaign to bring it up to the goals. Fear tactics
