Despite weather, area’s tourism industry still strong

While the weather appears not to have encouraged tourism to region this year, the area’s travel association says the industry is still going strong.

The North of Ontario Travel Association met in Thunder Bay Wednesday for its annual general meeting. While the group doesn't have any numbers, president Tim Lukinuk said this year went well for the region all things considered.

"We had a strange summer this year we had a hot spell and then a cold sell," he said.
"I think we're moving ahead."

Thunder Bay has seen a decline in traditional markets with things like motorcycle tours picking up the slack. But Lukinuk said initiatives like the Lake Superior Circle Tour still serve the region well.

"We're not so much into the emerging markets, what we're trying to do is focus on the tried and the true," he said.
