Police identify victim of fatal highway crash near Atikokan

Police have identified the victim of a Tuesday fatal motor-vehicle crash near Atikokan. Officials with the OPP say Fredrick James Munro, 76, of Atikokan died after a collision between the car he was an occupant of and a commercial vehicle.

Officials with the OPP say Fredrick James Munro, 76, of Atikokan died after a collision between the car he was an occupant of and a commercial vehicle.

Another occupant of the car, a 71-year-old Atikokan woman, was sent to a nearby hospital where she was treated for serious injuries. She was later transported to Thunder Bay.

The driver of the commercial vehicle, a 49-year-old Thunder Bay man, was not injured as a result of this crash.

OPP officials said Highway 11 was closed in both directions for several hours while the initial investigation of the incident was under way and crews were clearing the road of debris from the crash.

The incident occurred just prior to 1 p.m.

The highway was opened to one lane of traffic at about 8:15 p.m.

Police are now working in consultation with the Regional Coroner office.  A post mortem is scheduled to take place Wednesday at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
