Tuesday morning’s windchill was the coldest ever recorded in the city for the month of December.
Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson said the air at the Thunder Bay International Airport felt like a frigid - 51C with the windchill at approximately 8 a.m.
The base air temperature set a daily record for the second straight morning at - 38.8C, which froze out the previous record set in 1946 and 1967 by more than five degrees.
Coulson said forecasts for the next few mornings have temperatures in the - 36C to - 38C range, with daytime highs not expected to exceed - 20C.
The next reprieve won’t arrive until Friday, when temperatures are expected to reach a more seasonal - 11C daytime high.
He predicts it will only last for the one day before another cold Arctic air mass hits the region on the weekend to plunge the mercury back to a bitterly low level.
