Three incumbents join 2014 election race

By tbnewswatch.com

The first batch of incumbents have officially stepped forward in their re-election bids.

Joe Virdiramo, Brian McKinnon and Aldo Ruberto registered their candidacy on Monday, becoming the first sitting councillors to throw their names in the hat.

Virdiramo is the first candidate to declare out of Westfort while McKinnon joins David George Noonan in the Red River race. Ruberto is the second in the at-large pool after Kimberly Coreau registered last week.

The other candidate to officially register on Monday was David Polhill in the Northwood Ward, who was narrowly defeated by incumbent Mark Bentz in 2010. Shelby Ch’ng has also registered in Northwood.

There has yet to be a registered candidate in the mayoral race.

The final day for nominations is Sept. 12.

A list of declared candidates can be found here.

Sky High. I have not criticized any politician or others views on here. I merely pointed out the fact you may have more credibility to your political agenda if you used your real name. However I have noticed from reading your numerous posts that you seem to have a habit of critiquing everyone that has a different opinion of things than you. I must also point to the fact that you lashed out at my opinion, and called me a redneck, which I may or may not be, you also refer to me as Wynne. Is that your way of calling me another name "Liberal"? Perhaps it's time you realized that there are those in this town that are just simply fed up of opening their wallets for every hair brained idea that comes along. However with that being said everyone is entitled to their own opinion wether it is right or wrong and the sooner people in this town realize it the better. Perhaps you may learn a thing or 2 if you just listened for a change.

if the councilor doesn't have to live in the ward he is running in then what is the argument in support of 'ward' councilors?

We should have less councilors, they should all be 'at large' and pay them a decent wage and maybe they would treat their position like a job where they have to perform. Instead we have administration running the show.

My guy David Polhill is running again. AT the top of the year he'll have a way better chance of winning. He had more signs up than Keith Hobbs did in Northwood. GIVE 'EM HELL DAVE!

I do not agree with candidates not living in the ward they represent but this is what the Ontario web-site says on the matter:
Why is a person who doesn’t live in my ward allowed to be a candidate for ward councillor?

A candidate must be qualified to run in the municipality. They do not have to have a qualifying address in a specific ward. This is consistent with provincial and federal elections, where a candidate must reside in Ontario (or Canada, respectively), but does not need to reside in a specific riding. Any candidate who is elected by the voters in a ward is accountable to those electors, since they are the ones who will either vote for him or her again, or choose to vote for someone else in the next election.

you don't have to live in the ward if you are a ward councillor according to the rules of a municipal election

I'm looking for clarification.
Is it not true that if you are running for Councillor in a particular Ward, you have to live it that ward?
I like JV very much but I'm hearing he does not live in Westfort. Is this true?

Sky High, you seem to hide anonymously behind your computer screen as well. I think your opinions would have more weight to them if you used your real name, especially when it comes to pushing your personal political agenda.

I am anonymous yes, but I'm not whining about politicians and every decision they make. Show me one story where I criticized their decisions or said they should have gone another way. We voted them in...this is what you rednecks don't understand. I'm starting to believe that whiners just don't vote.

McKinnon must be dreaming. He does not accept calls, for a month we had issues in his ward and his mailbox was full - seemed forever. We finally were able to contact an at large councillor. Once he was voted in last time he forgot he had to do more than go to a few meetings.

Not sure who would waste their money going up against Hobbs. He's going to win in a landslide. There are a group of about 2 or 3 thousand that are unhappy with themselves and need someone to blame for their misfortunes, and Hobbs is an easy target (especially anonymously from behind their computer screens) Keith is the man who will take Thunder Bay from a quaint little hole to a world class city. Events Centre, here comes your plebiscite!

So I guess Hobbs can just scratch out the date on his 2010 campaign posters/ads and just roll on with those right! Re-air those 2010 campaign videos!

Hobbs winning by a landslide...anything is possible, in the states Jesse Jackson son, Jesse Jackson Jr won re-election in 2012 to Illinois' 2nd Congressional district by a landslide while he was in a mental institution!

There are certain old hippies, who live in their mothers basements, and still get sky high, who are totally removed and oblivious to reality. These adult children still believe in the concept that if you demand something., kick snd scream, for hours at a time, you will get what you want. They have been catered to by their moms all their life, and could not survive on their own. They dont own a car, and dont pay any bills. They sit on their computer all day and make silly comments, that are totally out of touch with reality. Lets see, have I missed any thing? Oh, yeah, they get their sister to drive them to the coffee shop. They tell you they have good jobs and lots of money, but, do they? Really?

I'm probably a lot younger than you, Eastender cane-shaker. I outright own my own house, and it isn't in the East End. I don't have a mom or sister that live in Thunder Bay--they left because cane-shaking whiners like you are fighting to keep Thunder Bay in the sixties. My vehicle is not a car, bit it is one year old. It's a beauty. I never said I had a lot of money and a good job. Tell me where I did. I may have said I love my job and don't squander my income, but never said I had a great job and lots of money. I may or may not have a great job and lots of money, but never wrote that I do. You're paranoid, you're a cane-shaker Eastender, and you want your potholes filled.

sure you own your house, sure you do.

Now we know why youre so anxious to have government cater to you, you have abandonment issues.

Its OK, someday you may find a real live friend other than cane shaking Keith Hobbs and you can stop telling everybody how they need to spend their tax money to coddle you some more.

you own your home outright... LOL, you probably pay rent and ride the bus when not on your one year old tricycle.
