A First Nation community is in mourning following the sudden passing last night of their long-time Chief.

Chuck McPherson had been the chief of Couchiching First Nation since 1998. The band manager and council met Monday to discuss his passing. They have decided not to comment on the situation until McPherson's family arrives in the community, located near Fort Frances.

McPherson made headlines in 2010 when his First Nation set up a toll booth on the Noden Causeway during the May long weekend.

He said it was the only way to get the attention of the provincial and federal governments over unresolved land claims.
