City may have found events centre partner

By Jamie Smith, tbnewswatch.com

The city have may have found its operator for the proposed events centre.

City council gave administration the go-ahead Monday night to negotiate a "confidential and non-binding letter of intent" with Thunder Bay LIVE, selected through the Request for Expression of Interest.

The city announced in June that it was looking for third party partners to help operate, maintain or finance the centre.

A media conference is scheduled for Tuesday morning at 11 a.m.

Everyone is complaining about taxes.... ya it sux but we live in Northern Ontario, deal with it! Most of you people that live in Tbay are non stop crying about taxes! i live in Red Rock and my taxes are just as high if not more then when i lived in Tbay!

This chance we have of bringing a great building to the Tbay area is great! People complain about empty seats at LU and North Star games let get serious people the AHL is alot different then the hockey we have now in the area!
We have the chance to see great hockey and great players come to our city! we should run with this while we have the chance!

bottom line its gunna cost yes to build it.. you have to realize its a huge building not a new tim hortons! In my opinion having the opportunity to see the game we all love at a level second to the NHL is amazing!
Its out of most of our hands and hopefully the right decision is made!

A VOTE? Why do we have to vote on everything...we have a city council for that and we voted them in....I can't wait to finally see this being done...in love seeing this city move forward and out of the Baby boomers hand and into the hands of people who like to see change...we don't want the city restored to how it was in 1940...I'm sure it was nice back then but we NEED change or were just gona keep hearing how boring this city is

Thunder Bay LIVE eh? I wonder if it's backed by the same people who backed Superior Fine Papers or Global Sticks? This is shaping up wonderfully to line the pockets of a select few local megalomaniacs. What a sham!

Don't be confused by the term 'Partner', there is a trail across Canada and the U.S. of management companies riding in on a white horse, operating the facility for a few years, filling their pockets and leaving the taxpayers with the bill...This agreement should be made public to disclose all of the hidden subsidies and surprises, before it is too late...

And im sure the proposed building site is right beside the marina already, no matter how much negative feedback the city gets about it being the wrong location for said centre.

We have too much open land around here to play with to just stuff & limit what we can build at the marina location!

If this multiplex comes to existence, may God have mercy on our souls.

fastball says:
Because....somehow with the construction of an event centre, our souls would be in mortal peril? The Anti-Christ will rise? The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse will ride?
Give me a break. If the existence of an event centre is that horrible a concept, you should leave - perhaps to find a place that is less....soul-threatening.

The four horseman have already rode through ... Boscoff , Hamilton ,Peterson and Hobbs along with their legions of city managers . That's why this city is in such a financial mess .

Great , I'm sure my tax bill will not skyrocket with the addition of a "for profit" middleman . If anyone thinks this "ThunderBay LIVE" will keep the taxpayers rates down your sadly mistaken . I also googled "ThunderBay LIVE" and got absolutely no hits , anyone know who owns/operates it ? My guess would be a entity connected with the BIA in the Heart of the Harbor .

The work and preparation that has gone into this major economic generator is very impressive, and well thought out.this past weekend with 150 teams and their parents, grandparents filling up every hotel room in Thunder Bay is proof that we are in the event business .the partnership shows leadership and smart planning here.

I guess you haven't read the independent reports or the article the cbc had regarding new multiplex and sports stadiums are a losing bet and they are NOT an economic generator. Google funding sports stadiums a losing bet CBC.

Hopefully, it's TRUE NORTH SPORTS and ENTERTAINMENT, the operators of the MTS Centre in Winnipeg and owners of the Winnipeg Jets and the AHL's St. John's IceCaps. The possibility of the Baby Jets in Thunder Bay is an exciting prospect!

The city, "any department".. running a new event centre, is scary...

Wallet open for the tax hikes that will come when this shell company goes belly up after the govt. incentives they get dry up.

Thunder Bay LIVE. lol

I know.... i'm being quick to judge. I hope to god i'm wrong and that this company has lots of excellent people with their own money to put into this white elephant project. Not holding my breath.

If you don't like the taxes MOVE!

We need this event centre ASAP!

I assume you also believe we NEED a monorail ASAP?

I would urge you to look up the definition of need and then apply what you learn to the mandate of municipal governments.

Good luck with your studies.

Good, they can build it and pay for it at the same time. With the chamber's report on the city and getting serious about spending report the city cannot afford to build this multiplex. We are already one of the highest taxed places to live in Ontario. City Council needs to look at getting back to the basics and not in the sports and entertainment business. With lower taxes, the people can decide on their own what they want to spend their extra money on. Plus look at all those empty seats at the Thunderwolves and North Stars games, why do we need anything newer or bigger when the fans and supporters of a new multiplex do not show up at these games already.

Junior A hockey doesn't have big crowds anywhere and University hockey is only big in a few venues. No one wants to go to the Gardens anymore. It's old and it stinks. Give us an OHL or AHL team and the arena will be full. Plus there will be great concerts and other events. Big conferences. We have to build this now to survive. If we wait another 10 years the cost will be astronomically higher. Onward ho, with or without you. Don't like it here, move-I'll hold the door for you.

Sure and tell us how in this -40C weather how you'll have no complaints walking 3 blocks to it due to no downtown parking. This is the Gardens v2... built in the entirely wrong location again.

sky high says:
You seriously didn't just write that, did you? We've been over this a thousand times and the verdict is in: the downtown PA site is the best place for our events centre. Should we put it in Innova Park, where parking is plentiful but the location is horrible? If you don't like walking and you don't like the cold, get yourself a hammock and go to Florida.

Oh, you precious muffin...suffering through that 5-odd minute walk on the occasional frigid night in winter. All those people in Winnipeg or Edmonton that journey to their facilities, they seem to manage just fine. No reports of frozen corpses littering the streets after events.
What about the other 330 days of the year when it's not cold? What's next...too rainy for you?

Awesome! Build it! I can't wait for someone to call it a boondoggle. Just like the marina hotel and condos that were supposed to never be built because of a lack of buyers.
