Police have identified those involved in what they say is the first homicide of 2014.

Thunder Bay Police have charged 38-year-old Priscilla Thomas with second-degree murder in the Saturday death of 35-year-old Jeffrey Munroe inside an apartment building on the corner of Kingsway Avenue and Walsh Street.

The police’s crime scene unit vehicle was parked outside the building early Sunday afternoon along with a squad car and a media release provided says the case is domestic in nature.

Neighbour Scot Sanford said Thomas and Munroe appeared to be a couple and that she had only moved into the building within the past couple of months. Sanford, who lives across the hall, said he didn’t believe the two were living together.

He didn’t see anything leading up to the incident that would lead him to believe there were problems.

“They seemed pretty happy,” Sanford said. “I didn’t see anything particularly wrong or anything that stood out negatively.”

Police responded to an ambulance assistance call at the building at approximately 7:40 a.m. on Saturday.

When Sanford awoke he heard paramedics tending to Munroe.

“I heard her being frantic in the sense that she was afraid he wasn’t going to be alright,” Sanford said. “She even asked one of the paramedics if he was going to be alright and one of the paramedics said no, he wasn’t going to be alright.”

Munroe was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Thomas appeared in court via video on Sunday morning.

Both the criminal investigations and domestic violence units are continuing their investigations.
