Group wants monument to list, honour local fallen soldiers

By Jamie Smith, tbnewswatch.com

A group is looking to honour all of the city's fallen soldiers.

The military Tribute Committee says while the city does have several war memorials, it doesn't have one that lists all the names of those who have died in battle.

"We owe a debt that can never be repaid to those who gave up their lives," Spokesman Jim Mauro told city council Monday night.

The project will likely take years to get off the ground Mauro said, but they want the city to propose a location for it should enough funds be raised to build it.

"This will not be an easy undertaking," he said.

While the group does have several ideas for locations, from Marina Park to the Kam River Park, it's looking for administration to make the recommendation.

Members of city council supported the idea but suggested the group get in touch with the Legion and other community organizations to keep it going forward.

Great idea. As I understand it the group just made suggestions as examples. In the end they want the city to decide.

Hopefully everyone will get behind this.

1. Prominent placing (ie marina park)
2. Fund it through the community, not taxes.
3. Should honour all those that made the ultimate sacrifice and those that didn't hesitate to serve their country.

Great idea to honour local fallen soldiers. It could however be opened up to also honour all local soldiers who have served for our country. For those soldiers that do return, the battle is not necessary over for them and deal with PTSD.

This is great. Its a very important idea to honour so many that deserve to never be forgotten.

I love how this group didn't come looking for a handout or begging for others to support them. They in turn are working to fund their ideas themselves and have only approached the city for some co-operation.

That right there is more honourable than any other group in recent memory that approached city hall.

Gentlemen, I will be happy and proud to support your efforts. I will provide a cash donation. Thank you very much for your honourable request and honourable approach. Its well received by myself.

There are a number of women involved in this group as well.
Why assume it's just men?

I would love to see a monument as such honoring the men and women that have fought for our country. Finally we will see our taxes go to good use. This monument belongs at Marina Park where it will be viewed by everyone so we can all remember them. At the Kam River Park too many are afraid to go down there. Maybe the city could spend our taxes on something beneficial rather than two large rusted poles with burnt out lights and full of webs, dirt etc.
