The local aviation world has lost one of its pioneers.

Harvey Friesen, a pilot who in 1972 began his takeover of Bearskin Airlines, died suddenly on Sunday in California. He was 65.

Friesen and his brother Cliff turned the regional carrier into a success story, eventually selling the airline in 2011 for $32.5 million.

The brothers remained in executive roles with Bearskin after the sale.
