Two south-side Mac’s Convenience Stores were robbed overnight.

In the first incident, the suspect entered the company’s Arthur Street location, produced a knife and demanded money from the register. The employee complied and the suspect fled.

The suspect is described as standing between 5-foot-10 and six feet tall and weighing about 190 pounds. The suspect was wearing a red and white Reebok sweater with a hoodie, white cloth mask, dark pants and black gloves.

The second robbery took place at the company’s South James Street store when a man walked in and demanded cash.

The suspect in this incident is described as standing between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-9, weighing about 160 pounds and was wearing a dark ski-style jacket with grey markings on the sleeves and on the back, a dark hoodie, baseball hat and jeans.

Anyone with information on either of these crimes is asked to phone Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a tip online at www.tipsubmit.com.

The Mac's employees are sitting ducks.

Nobody's forcing them to work there.

Imagine the concept of freedom. Imagine living in a country that gives you the freedom to not go do a job you think is unsafe.

Mac's employees are only sitting ducks because they volunteer to be one. If nobody wanted to do the job, they wouldn't be able to get employees.

Find a new cause Kyla, yours doesn't hold water.

So Duncan...
You assume that everyone has a choice...interesting.
How about those that have been forced by EI to take a job or be cut off (I know of one personally).
And then there are those that have no other options open to them at the time , its required to survive or become one of the offending robbers lol.
This is still no excuse for company's and owners to put the health and welfare of employees at risk with poor security.
The company's don't care , money is the bottom line.
If the government wont step in and regulate things , we the people can step in and force their hand if we put our minds to it.

nobody is forcing anybody to go work at Macs.

If you think the job is too dangerous, don't apply for it.

Is the concept of freedom too much for you to understand?

Its not Macs that puts the employees at risk, its the criminals. Government cannot stop criminal behaviour, they cant save you from this nonsense.

Its up to YOU to look after yourself.

You guys are such babys you cannot even understand the concept of personal responsibility. You seem to think that everything is up to somebody else to handle.

Heres one for the dummys who blame Macs... see if you can follow along.. I'll type sloe for you too...

If you or others don't think its safe to work at a Macs, don't take the job. Don't apply for it. If enough people think the same way you do, then Macs will either have to close down, pay more for employees, or install bomb shelters for the sissies to cower within.

but, keep doing it your way. Cry and moan for government to save you, its working sooo well.

Some people with no skills like it or not have to take whatever work they can find. That was very ignorant thing to say about the working poor. Maybe train Mac employees with 357 magnum revolvers within the cash register reach. Or they will have to hire harden Afgan Vets, pay them well, & let them work the night shift. Any fool that comes along with a knife gets the beating of their lives.

You are way off base. Go crawl back in your hole. It's either work at Macs or live off the government. I prefer these people work than be lazy. Good on them. Give them a hand for putting in an effort and trying to better themselves vs. giving up.

Nobody can protect them from criminal activities. Even the police cannot stop someone from doing something until that person breaks the law.

Macs employees need to be ready to defend themselves or if they cannot handle reality, they shouldn't take the job in the first place.

See, the more thieves know how easy it is to pull off a Mac's robbery, the more there will be. Is it me or does the suspect with the hockey jersey move a little too feminine?

I do believe the city has a pretty decent capture rate on these robberies. Not sure why they keep doing it. Bound to get caught.

So very sad....If you really watch the video with the suspect wearing the red/white shirt, I swear its a female, not a male....Watch closely @ how walk & leave the store, look @ the legs...Take a close look...

Vanity says:
There sure are a lot of these robberies, what is the underlying problem? Is it due to poverty ?
2/8/2014 6:40:20 PM
fastball says:
Yeah...they're too poor to afford their habit.
Shame on Mac's for throwing their employees under the bus for working in conditions like this.
Thieves know that Mac's is basically an ATM these days. Someone is going to get seriously hurt or worse one of these nights.
Put the employees and the cash register behind glass...and shut the place down after midnight.
2/8/2014 7:58:56 PM
Eastender says:
No better they rob Macs, than break into your house. If Macs closes after midnight, your house will be their next target.

If some one threatens you with a weapon, you should have the legal right to defend yourself with a weapon. Criminals have too many legal protections.
2/8/2014 9:55:04 PM
fastball says:
They rob the stores because they're always open, there's cash there, and the employees have orders not to resist. It's easy - just walk in and demand cash - and they'll get it. Junkies are opportunistic...if it's easy, they'll do it. Burgling a home is different...there's rarely any cash lying around, and there might be a big dog or an armed homeowner on the premises.
If Macs doesn't care enough to protect their employees and their profits - hell, as an employee there, I wouldn't be risking life and limb for the company. Hell, no.

A gross over-generalization, simplistic to a fault...and only holds appeal to the simpleminded.

In this day and age, why is the video such low quality? C'mon Mac's, spend a few bucks on some decent cameras that give a clear picture of the perp.
You just might get better results.

They are probably paying so much for insurance they can't afford new cameras!
2/9/2014 8:39:30 AM
#justsaying says:
Hey murillorules, i guess the cameras could be a bit better - but do you mean to tell me if you knew either of of these guys these images would not be recognizable to you? Common! The cameras are not the problem here for "better results"! Maybe if the community started helping the police identify these criminals then they wouldn't be roaming the streets looking for victims.

As a citizen of this City, i'm sick and tired of people laying blame on the businesses who become victims of what WE allow to take place.

We throw criticisim of businesses like Mac's, but if they decided to close all their stores in our City, pack up and just leave because of the crime issues here - making what 100 plus people unemployed, then i'm sure someone in our City would criticise them for increasing our unemployment rate too!!!
2/9/2014 9:15:11 AM
#justsaying says:
How is it you are all bashing Mac's when something happens in their stores, but when Shoppers Drug Mart get's robbed or has violent thefts; or Boston Pizza gets robbed; or that poor old lady gets robbed walking down the street no one seems to bash them? At least Mac's is releasing the suspects images, no one else is!!

Kyla Turner says:
S Duncan, are you saying that if all the safety precautions developed for industries such as healthcare, construction, mining etc hadn't been put into law, it would be the employees fault if they were injured on the job?

I happen to think advocating for better safety standards in a province that does not currently have specific "working alone" regulations, or prescriptive regulations for late-night retailers, is a very worthy cause.

People need jobs, and if employers want to do business in Canada they have a legal responsibility to protect their employees from physical violence in the workplace.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the rest if us, though.
2/9/2014 12:36:33 AM
Kyla Turner says:
Instead of “creating more problematic situations”, target-hardening with a buzzer-barrier system may actually afford Thunder Bay a “diffusion of benefits" as described in Situational Crime Prevention, Successful Case Studies by Ronald V. Clark, School of Criminal Justice, Rutgers University.

This diffusion of benefits idea describes how focused crime prevention efforts in a specific area can actually provide benefits beyond the targeted setting.

Not only is Mac's displacement theory NOT supported by empirical research, but displacement is never 100% and thus ALWAYS leads to a reduction in crime, improving the safety of customers, workers, and those in the surrounding area.

joejoe says:
The one in the red jersey is definitely female!!!It's so sad that mac's makes there store such a target, It's time they get security glass and a night drawer, so there staff don't have to be so vulnerable, Some mac's stores in bigger city's have night windows, So if the customer wants chips or pop or whatever, The staff goes and gets it for them!!! And these places never get robbed! Example Shell on Arthur and Leland, Never gets robbed, "Night Window" Get with it Mac's!!!

Are you people not paying attention?? It is not only Mac stores that are targets.Restaurants, pharmacies, video stores are being robbed. I guess we should close all them as well. We are all sitting ducks.
S Duncan you don't hold much water either.

Burney says:
Hey S Duncan. The lousy job prospects in this city are "forcing" them to work there. A paid job is not a "volunteer" position. The only thing you're right about is the freedom part, like I have the "freedom to call you an idiot.

joey joe joe jr. Shabadoo says:
where is the "danger pay" for these workers?

if these were city employees, the place would have had every type of security system & security guards after the 1st robbery.

the 1 robber is even smiling on his way out the door knowing how easy it was to rob these stores...how sad is that?

seems someone has to die b4 MAC's takes the robberies seriously & does something to stop them.

Put the blame where it belongs Its not the cops there doing their job its not the store employees or the owners of the store it s the lawyers that reduce the crime and the JUDGES that let them go so they can re offend again and again and again keeps them lawyers and judges employed in a nice new court house

justsomegirl says:
It is the criminals fault. End of story. Why are people trying to lay blame elsewhere? No matter what the reason is for someones circumstance that led them to rob a store, it is their fault. And to lay fault or shame on someone for having a job that you deem unacceptable or below yourself...I can't even believe I read that comment. You must lead a perfect existance to be able to make a judgement like that.
