A woman in Red Lake was sent to hospital after an altercation with police led to gunshots.

OPP say they were called to a noise complaint for a second time on Saturday at around 8:47 p.m. Upon arriving they were informed the suspect had ingested an unknown quantity of medication.

Police say acting out of concern for her safety they forcefully entered the residence, where an altercation with suspect took place and a firearm was discharged by police.

The female suspect was taken to hospital and treated for an injury.

Both police officers were also taken to hospital and subsequently released.

OPP officials have notified the province’s special investigations unit, which has taken over the case, invoking its mandate. There's no indication what, if any, charges will be laid.
