Collision closes Highway 61

By Leith Dunick, tbnewswatch.com

A multi-vehicle collision on Highway 61 has left the route temporarily closed and a man with non-life-threatening injuries

Police said the pile-up occurred near the train track overpass between Arthur Street and Broadway Avenue on Thursday afternoon.
Traffic is being diverted at this time.

The investigation is ongoing and OPP say updates will be provided when available.

Police remind motorists to drive with caution. Thunder Bay Police have asked motorists to stay off the road if possible.

Here is the issue Mr Duncan.

The highway in that stretch is only 4 lanes for less than 1 km. As a result cars/trucks don't pull over to the right, because in 30 seconds they will have to merge to the left again.

I travel that road at exactly 90 km/h (posted speed limit) and I stay in the centre lane. Cars and trucks fly by on the right hand lane at 120 to 130 km Frequently they get jammed a few seconds later, and typically cut off drivers off as they merge back to the left.

They are the hazards NOT the folks doing 90 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.

I am not a slow driver, and log a lot of highway miles, safely and quickly every year. But in a congested section of road with blind curves, a smart driver does the speed limit, and avoids unnecessary lane changes.

I am well aware that if a highway is four lanes, you should stay in the right lane except for passing, but in cases where the twin section of road is so absurdly short, stay in the centre lane.

And they do have the right Mr. Knowitall. They may be turning left at the next intersection and with the morons driving in this city you have to grab that fast lane or S.Duncan and his big 4x4 who can see through cars won't let you in the lane so you can make the turn.

Nobody tells S.Duncan what speed he must drive at because he is King of the Road.

largedogowner says:
To all the people who are complaining about the "slow" or "scared" drivers. These drivers are driving to the conditions. I am one of those drivers. I am not scared to drive the highway, however, I am scared of the other drivers that are driving like it is summer out there. I drive according to the conditions, just like we are supposed. Slow drivers don't cause the accidents its the IDIOTS who think that because they have a PICK UP truck or a 4x4 that they can drive at or above the speed limit. Give me a break, if we all slowed down we would have less accidents on the hwy. I will continue to drive slow and proud because I know I will be making destination in one piece.
2/14/2014 1:03:18 PM
S Duncan says:
If we all just stopped on the highway we wouldnt have accidents either.

Im a fancy, busy man. I have places to go. If you are scared to exist in the minor traffic we have in Thunder Bay then stay home. Its not up to us to slow down to your inferior driving ability, so getout of my way!

You decide what speed you drive and Ill decide what speed I drive, but we both better be in the right lane because somone may want to go faster..

so we are supposed to KEEP RIGHT unless you are overtaking somebody. That doesnt mean you take 3 miles to do it either. You make your pass quickly and get back in the right lane.

now speed up, stay home, or keep right. those are the rules you need to concern yourself with. nevermind what other people are doing, drive your car properly and you will have no trouble.
2/14/2014 3:33:45 PM
Eastender says:
You have a very simplistic approach to driving in Blunder Bay. Mostly on that poor excuse we have for an expressway. It is not feasible in many cases to be passing on the left, then pulling into the right lane again, only to have to make a left hand turn at the next set of lights, which requires another lane change. Many people drive in the left lane for that very reason. I have driven in many US cities with similar conditions to our expressway, where there are lights every mile or so, and with much heavier traffic than here, and believe me, people are driving in every lane. Just because it is four laned, does not imply that freeway rules must be adhered to, only common sense prevails. Something the speed jockeys in this town seem to lack.
2/15/2014 12:10:50 AM
S Duncan says:
If people abided by the simple rules of the road, there would be must less issue getting into that left lane to make that turn.

Because someone is lacksadasically driving miss daisy along in the left lane the whole system breaks down.

it gets worse when someone falls into a trance behind them waiting for that next intersection. People that do not pass are also a large problem.. they just line up like morons behind the first one that's driving 10mph under the speed limit..

and I aint got time for that.

Just because you get passed driving slowly on the highway doesn't make people with 4x4 idiots. You driving too slowly is just as much of a liability as someone driving fast.

smartguy83 says:
This is a common problem year round. Traveling at the speed limit (90km/hr) and catching up to someone who has no idea where they are (going 60km/hr) can lead to dangerous situations. I get that I have to be responsible too. But requiring me to slow down because someone else is impeding traffic is unacceptable. Especially on those days where both lanes are taken up by those who do not understand traffic flow/rules.

Driving over the bridge just past the airport is painful to say the least going 2/3 the speed limit with 30 cars in a row all riding their breaks.
2/14/2014 4:02:30 PM
Eastender says:
So you come up to someone who is doing 60 in a 90and there are 30 cars in front of him all doing about the same speed, mainly because the lead car is approaching a set of lights at the airport intersection, and judisciously slows down in anticipation of a yellow light. Your options are......
A-slow down, relax, bite your tongue, keep cool
B-pull up to the guys bumper, honk your horn, curse, swear, give him the finger, roll down your window and start screaming
C. Pull out and pass and take your chances, because you have a monster truck, and you are late to pick up your girlfriend, and....well....your just too important to have to slow down.

2/15/2014 12:23:29 AM
Eastender says:
The highway posted speed limit is exactly that, a speed limit. It DOES NOT require that you drive at that speed. It does however require that you drive at a reasonable speed for the conditions. During rush hour, people accelerating from the red light at the airport intersection, are not at a drag race, some are allowing others to pass them on the right hand lane which eventually merges. Therefore they are perhaps going a little slower, but with heavy rush hour traffic, congestion does occur. You are required to drive according to the conditions, and according to the capabilities of your vehicle. Not every one has all wheel drive. Not everyone drives a monster truck. The problem occurs when the knuckle head leadfooted yolops have some of the lead travel up to where their brain should be, and think that just because you dont drive like an idiot, that you dont belong on the road. You do not have exclusive priviledges to tailgate or intimidate o
2/14/2014 12:43:07 PM
grs says:
See, that's another part of the problem. You are on a HIGHWAY, not a city street. This means that if you are taking 2 km to accelerate from a standstill to 50 km/h, then another 5 km to accelerate from 50 km/h to highway speeds, you are a big part of the problem.

It's likely that these people aren't drag racing. They are simply adjusting their driving from city street driving to highway driving, which implies a faster speed, hence, faster acceleration.

If you find yourself driving and "tsk-tsk'ing", shaking your head, while people are passing you in the right lane perhaps you should re-evaluate your driving habits.
2/14/2014 2:12:58 PM
DougMyers says:
It would seem the logical thing to do if you are being tailgated is to move into the slower lane or pull onto the shoulder and let the faster traffic by you.

I do it all the time when I am towing my travel trailer. People are very appreciative and it is a simple thing that helps keep traffic moving.

Instead around here when I see someone being tailgated they wait until the vehicle attempts to pass and they speed up to try to block them.

Ya that will make things much better.

While I agree that slow drivers on the highway are annoying, we don't have a speed minimum on our highways, people are entitled to drive as slowly as they want, unfortunately.
2/14/2014 10:17:58 AM
S Duncan says:
all drivers should be in the right lane unless they are overtaking another vehicle. Just because youre driving the speed limit it does not entitle you to lollygag along in the left lane.

So drive as slowly as you want but keep to the right.

When you come to a Broadway Ave red light and theres 8 cars in line all in the left lane and none in the right lane theres a problem. I will take the right lane all the time.

One because Im usually going far and dont need to be behind all those who are turning left at 61B, or right at riverview, or whatever..

but Im also not gonna sit at a green light with some dummy texting or driving a little scrap car that takes a month to reach 90kph.. even going down that hill!

People need to learn how to accellerate on the highway, or actually buy a real car that can. Also people complaining about 4x4s etc.. did it ever occur to you that we can actually see a whole lot better than you? We're not down in the slush and can see through cars ahead.

I arrived just after the accident and I can tell you that section of highway on the overpass was ice. I rolled up there very slowly and when I touched the brakes all 4 tires locked up. Lucky it is uphill and I was able to just coast to a stop with room to spare. All that being said I had no trouble maintaining control. Stay off those brakes, leave room and drive around the problem.

I have to agree with the replies above that the issue is those too afraid to be driving on a highway. When it is clear there is always soeone driving 20 to 30 km/h under the posted the limit. When it is snowing we are liucky to reach 30 km/h.

Folks if you are scare to drive on the highway, stay off of it. Move to town, take a cab, call a friend but realize by driving that slow you are now the hazard on the road!

2/14/2014 6:21:50 AM
S Duncan says:
If you cannot drive comfortably on the highway then you have no business being behind a wheel at any speed.

Nobody is forcing them to drive on the highway. They are making the choice to drive on the highway instead of using other options.

You seem to think certain people are entitled to drive slowly on the highway and cause traffic issues.

Stop making excuses for people incapable of properly (and lawfully) operating a motor vehicle.

The amount of cry babies that drive these days is unreal! Drive it properly or get off the road!
2/14/2014 9:15:53 AM

Stop making excuses for these people. I don't care where you are from, if you are not comfortable driving on a highway, you should not be operating any motor vehicle anywhere. 2/14/2014 1:23:34 PM
smartguy83 says:
Wrong. You can take the route and come out by the mill avoiding the length of travel on the highway. I take it all the time when I am already in Westfort. It is actually faster as the traffic flow is faster avoiding those who treat the highway as a 60 km/hr zone.

2/14/2014 9:10:22 AM
S Duncan says:
Youre still supposed to keep right regardless of road conditions.

Besides maybe you think road conditions dictate your 60kph speed and I may think they are fine for 90kph.

If I drive a real vehicle that can safely travel at those speeds and you don't Im going to pass you. Someone may pass me too. So KEEP RIGHT!

Its not up to you to decide the speed everyone must travel, so get out of the darn way! Just because someone is "uncomfortable" driving a certain speed doesnt mean I have to lower myself to their level.

What is this.. communist roads now?? everybody must lower their abilities to match the people with none?

Keep right cause I'm coming by you one way or another!

I drive this stretch of highway between Arthur and Broadway a lot. 9 times out of ten there I get stuck behind one or more cars traveling 60 - 70 km/hr. I don't know what it is about that short stretch of highway that people can't even get close to the speed limit. If you cant handle driving highway speeds on the highway take a different road. these horrible drivers are a much bigger hazard on the highway than any speeder.
2/13/2014 11:02:43 PM
DougMyers says:
No one would have to do that if those too afraid to be on the highway would find another way to travel. Move to town or get a taxi if you are too afraid to drive at the speeds everone else is.

Yesterday was an exception with very bad conditions. However I still had to go around people you looked as though they feared for their life on the road. Find another way home if you are that scared. You are causing more problems then if you were going too fast by being a hazard on the road.

Actually you are incorrect. The slow traveller on the highway can and has been charged with either impeding the flow of traffic or obstruction of traffic.

In most other areas of the province this is more common but for some reason the police around here are reluctant to enforce it.

I drive the expressway daily, I drive the speed limit or even dare I say slightly above it and yet the drive almost always has the feel of being a part of the Road Warrior movie.Invincible super-drivers in their 4x4 trucks and SUVs weaving in and out of traffic travelling well above highway speeds and more often than not, ending up parked beside you at the next red light (if they don't just blow through it.)Is there an unwritten rule in Tbay that when a light turns red that means only the next three to four vehicles can make a left hand turn into oncoming traffic? I agree with other comments though as well,if you can't drive the speed limit, get out of the left lane.
