Fire crews had a busy start to their Family Day after an early morning fire.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a Walkover Street home at approximately 3 a.m. Monday morning when neighbours noticed smoke and flames emerging through the house. Nobody was home at the time of the fire and two cats were rescued.
"Fire crews were able to achieve a quick knockdown and there is interior damage to the house," said Thunder Bay Fire Rescue fire prevention officer Bob Vander Ploeg.
"There is some structural damage to the floor in the living room front entrance way. I can't say for certain how bad it is at this point."
"The fire may have started in the basement but that's not confirmed yet," he said.
An investigation into the cause is ongoing but Vander Ploeg said there are no indications that would lead him to believe it to be suspicious.
