Distracted driving is now the No. 1 cause of fatal highway crashes in this province.
That’s according to new traffic statistics released by the OPP, which highlight that distracted driving is now leading to more highway fatalities than impaired driving.
According to those same statistics, the story isn’t any different in Thunder Bay.
“For 2013, in the Northwest division (of Ontario), four fatal collisions were investigated in which distracted driving was a factor,” OPP Sgt. Shelley Gar said during an interview with CKPR Radio Tuesday.
She added that impaired driving was the main factor in two fatal crashes in that same year, while speed played the primary role in one other fatal crash.
Garr said last year distracted driving led to 670 collisions in the Northwest, while impaired driving led to 79.
