A local landmark is getting more than $2 million in renovations.
On Monday city council approved a contract to Tom Jones Corp. for $2.2 million for interior work on the Whalen Building.
The 100-year-old highlight of the north-side skyline will get some help to bring it into the 21st century, including three floors of redevelopment, energy efficient electrical systems and accessible washrooms.
It will also renovate the seventh floor for the city's Tourism Division to move in.
The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation and Fednor kicked in $1 million each for the work. Some councillors wondered if the building would be fully occupied after the work was done.
City development manager Mark Smith said that wouldn't be the case but finding tenants is on track with administration's five-year plan for the building.
