The mayor isn't optimistic that a proposed youth centre will go ahead as planned.

Earlier this year city council approved a plan in principle to partner with the Indian Friendship Centre to turn the former Port Arthur Prosvita into a youth centre and a new home for the 50-year-old Friendship Centre.

The city's share, including funding from the federal and provincial government, would be around $2.5 million plus $300,000 a year in operating costs.

But Mayor Keith Hobbs said getting the money from senior levels of government doesn't look good.

Federal Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt has said there is federal funding for Indian Friendship Centres specifically that the local centre could ask for, which would apply to the second phase of the project.

And a meeting with the province at the recent Ontario Good Roads Association conference didn't bode well.

"We have to do some more exploring on that," Hobbs said. "And the province isn't going to be too excited if the feds aren't involved."

It also doesn't look good for a hold on the building that's set to expire at the end of the month. Friendship Centre’s executive director Bernice Dubec said she hopes the city will buy the building.

While Hobbs said that could be an option, council will meet in closed session next Tuesday to discuss property matters, he's been clear from the beginning that the project needs to have leveraged funding and it is not something he wants the city to do alone.

"No, not me personally I'd have to ask council about that," he said.

With youth centres being a top priority, it's left the city looking for a Plan B. There are a lot of possibilities, including maybe using local community centres to fill the need.

"Maybe we team up with community centres and see if they can put a youth component into different neighbourhoods," Hobbs said.

Hobbs said there's still a possibility that the original plan could go ahead but it's not looking good and would likely be delayed at this point.

Hobbesy, I think we all deserve to know why you are choosing to make this decision behind closed doors.

The city was the one that came to the Friendship Centre and offered to help build a youth centre.
And to top it all off, if this doesn't go through the Prosvita will have to claim bankruptcy.

Now what Hobbesy?

It seems to me the city has forgotten that there is a youth center in Victoriaville mall, that they gave $50000 to last year. A private youth center that is funded by Wasaya.

But you know..it is so easy for this city to forget who they have given out all the "free" money to.

Can't kids do anything on their own anymore besides getting in trouble? Why do we have to pay to raise everyone else's children. I paid my own child care expenses and we did things with our kids together and teens actually did constructive things to improve their lives with parental support and not millions of dollars in kids centres. If you want kids YOU pay for them and raise them- not tax payers or your employer.

The Youth Centre is just another waste of money.
How about supporting our Community Centre. Programs Like Evergreen in the east end.
We need youth centre in our neighbourhoods We do not need to send our youth across the city. To hang with stranger who we as parent no nothing about.
Just another waste of money by this council.
This youth centre is just another example of this council turning its backs on neigbours.

I don't love the city being on the hook for 300,000 a year for this facility. I would rather see that money spent (I think it should not be spent) but on our existing youth centres like Boys & Girls Club, Underground Gym, and Youth Tbay.

What a day for all the Hobbs Haters! He has been getting destroyed on a number of various issues on this site! I am positive today we gained a few more haters...welcome aboard! He is imploding and burying himself in an election year!

Destroying him? You're not even annoying him lol. You cane shakers are like miniscule little mosquitos that don't even bite. Are you one of the lovelies that were at the library the other night taking up a nickel collection for coffee money?

But we still very much need that $106 Million $$$ event center and the $25 Million dollar Art Gallery... Once again you have proven yourself to be nothing short of an "EPIC FAILURE"... is slowly UN-ravelling and Imploding at the same time...quite the trick actually...time for you too be kicked to the curb in October of 2014...;)
3/13/2014 8:54:49 PM
sky high says:
Yes we do need it very much, this events centre. There are youth centres all over the city, why do we need yet another 2.5 million one? Who's going to kick the mayor to the curb in October? You and the 99 other cane shakers who were at the library the other night? Hobbs is going to win again, and I'll remind you what I said the day after the election, ok Fred? Or Harry, or Stanley, or whatever your mom named you in 1932

Sky high, You continually prove yourself to be an ignorant little troll. No matter what the story is you respond with "cane shaker". Nobody cares what you have to say. So get back to your McJob, break is over and the line up is getting long in the drive thru.

sky high says:
If I had a 'mcjob', as you call it...would I really be in favour of raising our taxes to fund an events centre (if federal funding doesn't become available)? I like how you make fun of people in low paying jobs though...not very nice. Perhaps everyone in the low paying food service industry should get together and file a defamation suit against you. Very pathetic of you to make fun of young people trying to put themselves through school or those who use these jobs to barely get by. Pathetic

mcnews says:
Had most of you bothered to read or watch the story you would've noticed Hobbs said he was not willing to support this without funding from senior levels of government and has talked to the City Manager about providing more money to neighborhood community centres instead. The Indian Friendship Centre has kicked in $0 towards this plan. And now wants the City to buy the building for them? That is scandalous. But this won't be a decision of the Mayor it will be a decision of Council in the very near future.

Sure, but their willing to spend a couple of million on the phase 3 study. The Feds will not provide cash for a rink call it what you want, it's still a glorified rink.

If it's so bloody great, why isn't the private sector all over it with cash in hand?

It's ok for a NHL sub team to expect us to build the $100 million plus centre so they can continue to take in the profits while the tax payers pay huge ticket prices and then cover the shortfalls with our property taxes?

The Auditorium currently loses about $600k a year (could be more, can't recall last figures published). This will only get bigger and again who covers it?

I think $300k is a wise investment in our youth. How much is the Hockey team owners kicking in? Oh yeah $0,000,000.00

RE Sky High and your constant remarks about "Cane Shakers". You as a person make me want to vomit. When you refer to us cane shakers, you are also including not only seniors, but also everyone from ages 1 to 100 with a disability who relies on a cane or other assistive devices to walk or for balance. I am happy that you live in your Peter Pan paint by number make believe world and that you are so perfect. I find you insulting, repulsive and lacking any respect for anyone including yourself. Maybe a lawsuit should be started against you for defamation of character and discrimination against people with disabilities and mobility issues. Think before you type. What you say affects everyone. People with and without disabilities as well as seniors.

You're pretty sad. Go look up 'metaphor' and give that word a bit of thought. There are people close to me who walk with a cane, but guess what....they support an events centre and the hard work of our mayor because, unlike you, they aren't sardonic and bitter human beings. Cane shakers has nothing to do with seniors or people with mobility issues. METAPHOR. And I am filing both of our posts in case the 100 of you take up a change collection to get going with your lawsuit.

Sorry to butt in.
I was born at night but not last night.

I have to agree that "Cane Shakers" is a direct shot at seniors. I wouldn't put to much weight to targeting the disabled community.

I'm sure you are mature enough to realize that things get old really quick these days. i.e. Bent Poles, Mistake By The Lake and of course Cane Shakers.
Time to just suck it up and move on as none of us are solving anything here other than venting to the anonymous person for whom we've created a character in our minds. Some we agree with, some we don't.
The only way anyone will make change is if they run for the position that has the power to do so.

sky high says:
No, when I refer to 'cane shakers' I'm referring to anyone who doesn't think progressively. If all we do is fill potholes, this city will die. If you bothered to read my post you would have seen that I said that I have people close to me who walk with canes but support the events centre. There are more seniors who SUPPORT the events centre than those who don't! And these seniors are not cane-shakers. Cane shakers, in my mind, are those who whine about everything our council does...except fill potholes. One of the most amazing things about Thunder Bay is the hockey skills we possess...we are a hockey town. We like to play it and watch it. Do you suggest renovating the Gardens again and then filling potholes until we run out of asphalt?

Watchful says:
Sky high, how and what produced you. Oh I know Ms Cane Shaker. You are so disturbed that all you can do is cut down those who are older than you. Do you have mommy and daddy issues or is that what you call them. Since you show no respect for adults I am presuming that either you were hatched or your own cane shakers made a serious error one night. Oh and by the way take a close look at Hobbs and his second or third wife, they are also cane shakers.
When arguing an issue, stick with the facts, stop the insults. You might be surprised at the results and respect from all ages you could gain. Discussing issues is healthy, attacking people is bullying and someone who does this on a continuous basis shows signs of mental issues.
