Fire crews were able to keep a small fire from severely damaging a Northwood area home on Friday night.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a call at a house on Park Row after a resident returned home shortly before 8 p.m. and discovered a fire in the basement.

There were no other occupants home at the time and no injuries were reported.

The fire was extinguished before there was any structural damage but officials say the home suffered “extensive smoke damage.”

The cause remains under investigation.
