Ontario is again looking at ways to give its distracted driving laws more teeth.
The province may soon issue demerit points along with an intensified fine against drivers caught breaking the new distracted driving laws.
Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray says drivers caught using cellphones while behind a wheel will face three demerit points and a maximum fine of $1,000 under his proposed legislation.
Meanwhile, CAA officials say it's time distracted driving become as socially unacceptable as drunk driving.
The province is also looking at new rules to reduce accidents between vehicles and bicycles.
Murray has proposed a one-metre rule that he says will make everyone safer. He says right now, some cars give only inches while others give a dangerously wide path for bicycles.
