Ontario is again looking at ways to give its distracted driving laws more teeth.

The province may soon issue demerit points along with an intensified fine against drivers caught breaking the new distracted driving laws.

Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray says drivers caught using cellphones while behind a wheel will face three demerit points and a maximum fine of $1,000 under his proposed legislation.

Meanwhile, CAA officials say it's time distracted driving become as socially unacceptable as drunk driving.

The province is also looking at new rules to reduce accidents between vehicles and bicycles.

Murray has proposed a one-metre rule that he says will make everyone safer.  He says right now, some cars give only inches while others give a dangerously wide path for bicycles.

not only can your licence eventually become suspended with enough demerits, insurance companies also penalize the individual for years with increased premiums

ABOUT TIME!!!!

I agree with you fedhead and thank you for the post! I am really getting tired of locking up the brakes on my truck to scare a person into driving responsibly!

If only the public was outraged as much about the corrupt government running this country as much as distracted drivers....

to NowayJose : you try to cause accidents? that is not very smart and as dangerous as the distracted drivers out there (the only difference is that the distracted drivers are stupid and you are just plain malicious of intent). hopefully you never actually get rear ended, but with an attitude like that its seems an inevitability - i pray no one gets maimed or killed because of your attempts at road justice. good luck out there to all!!!!

Bring it on! But for the bicycles.....hard to move over 1 metre on memorial in the middle of winter with another vechicle beside you.

I would assume you know that the big wide pedal is called a brake pedal. If you press on it you will slow down and when the left lane is clear you can merge over and go around the cyclist. So simple yet thousands can't comprehend the use of this device.

Thousands of people will be involved in accidents as a result of speeding, but hey, let's focus on the thing that gets all the press lately!

The police should be included in this also. I passed yet another officer driving down Rosslyn Rd today. If it is against the law for me, it should be for them as well. There are hands free devices that can be used by the officers, pretty sure all the new pice cars should come with Bluetooth. This is also a slippery slope, just wait until people start getting charged for drinking a coffee, or other beverage while driving. To me the term "distracted driving" is a bit to vague and could be applied to many different situations while driving.

Stiffer penalties are long overdue for this nonsense of people texting while driving.

I use bluetooth in my H2 so I am good and others if they need to really yap while driving, buy some kind of hands free device for your vehicle if its not already available.

Smartphones will not be able to currently pick up channel 493 as its down so we cannot watch the continuing series "Oh no! There's a..."

A woman in southern Ontario was busted for putting on her make up while driving so I think drinking your coffee or eating mc ds might be next on the list too. So watch out folks.

Has anyone driven down Arthur street (for example) lately? We're supposed to pay attention to roadsigns, right? I spend more time glancing at the signs on the side of the road and the front end of vehicles popping out from behind towering snowbanks than I do watching the road in front of me. I find the # of signs on some street way more distracting than a phone 10 inches from my face.

I am more intrested in the police dealing with the agressive bicycle riders than the distracted drivers. There are far too many clowns out there on their bicycles acting like they own the road.

I watched some fool riding down memorial ave in the tire tracks basically along the white line between the right and left lane in a snow storm flipping off people that honked at him. I laughed my ass off when he wiped out, jumped up and ran for the curb with a look of terror in his eyes as the car behind him desperatly tried to avoid running over the bike on the road.

I guess he realized a car was bigger than him his middle finger and his bicycle, karma .... pure karma

I don't have a problem with most cyclists but so many refuse to use the bike lanes, keep right and are acting like they not only have the right away but they own the road. you hit me you scratch my paint, I hit you different story, don't even want to start on those tools riding e bike's .......

let's not get carried away now.... drinking coffee, how is that distracted driving? texting yes, however I am quite capable of drinking my coffee without my eyes leaving the road. Lets not get carried away here and start making more rules for the sake of making them .... what's next no radio? my sub's make my rear view mirror move, is that a distraction?

how bout we shift focus back to parents teaching their childern common sense!

The penalty should be seizure/ forfeiture of the phone, a $500 fine and three demerit points. That might smarten up these idiots.

You guys all sound like my wife. She can't drive half a block without encountering a bad driver and a story that ends near road rage. I drive 1000 times km's than her and have 1% of the road rage stories than she does. I don't have the heart to tell her, but I will tell the rest of you. Maybe it's time to look into the mirror when y'all are complaining about all of the bad drivers out there??? I think that bad driver find bad drivers. I certainly don't find them all that often despite driving hundreds of km's per week.

Maybe YOU are one of the bad drivers out there? Just because you drive more doesn't mean you are doing it properly.

Maybe people should educate themselves a bit better before chiming in.

After studies had been actually looked at objectively it has been found to show eating while driving IS dangerous, people are just too used to this old behavior.

http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/transport-theory/eating-and-driving-an-unacknowledged-danger/

For those not willing to read the while article here's a sum

Driving with a bac of .08 (which is higher than our legal limit) causes a delay of 12 % in reaction time, mean while eating while driving causes reaction delay of 44%

So it's about time we stop letting people eat while driving. And while were at it we need to get rid of this blue tooth exception, if your going to drive then DRIVE! Get off the phone period!
