Tbaytel mobile data network disrupted for much of the afternoon

By tbnewswatch.com

Some mobile phone users across the region noticed a disruption for much of Saturday afternoon.

Tbaytel said their mobile data network experienced an outage, meaning customers were unable to access web pages, email, and phone to phone message services such as iMessage and Blackberry Messenger.

Text messages and calls were unaffected.

Tbaytel reported the problem to be fixed around 4 p.m. with service restored across the network. They added technicians were continuing to monitor the situation.

Oh my god, you mean we had to live without a cellphone for a few years. This clearly violates my rights.

I thought that with the new regulations in place, providers like t-bay tel weren't allowed to charge you for getting out of your plan early.

Wolfie says:
I believe they can still charge you up to the amount of the unamortized remainder of your phone subsidy.

Otherwise everyone would be able to get the cheap "on-contract" phone price and then walk away.

On Monday council will approve TBAYTEL borrowing $10 million to improve their infrastructure.
Had TBAYTEL not put $15 million into the Renew Thunder Bay fund would they still have to borrow?
But then would we have the money in the Renew fund for a proposed event centre?
Council should just give TBAYTEL their money back.

TBay tel appears to provide 70% of services for 100% of the fees associated with mobility. Dropped calls, upgrades and just poor serivce. Being locked into contract customers have no choice but to pay. I am all for paying for service I receive and it indeed is my choice to obligate to a contract. However; I feel if service is not 100% bills should be adjusted. Just my oppinion.

I haven't had any disruption in service for over a year.. it's been almost perfect actually. No Missed calls, or missed texts, no data drops out and FAST data.... oh wait... I'm with Bell. and paid $550 to buy out of my contract.. Best. Move. Ever.

My Tbaytel cell service has always been great,,, I,m not sure where this outage occurred? Kids never said a word about it and those things never leave thier sides.

Now my shaw cable bill is a total different story!!

Guess you haven't been with Bell long then. I've been stuck with them for 3 years (moved here from Toronto area) and their coverage up here is pathetic. Until recently as soon as I left the city I had nothing. Now they have coverage in Fort Frances but still nothing in Atikokan or along the highway let alone anywhere you might camp. My daughters phone works everywhere (Fido which uses TBay's towers via Rogers who owns Fido). I plan on switching as soon as the old contract runs out in a couple of months.

Hey! Don't diss Tbaytel! Cmon! They've got their "Big Spring Meltdown" sale on now..... 69.99 for the same plan Bell charges $50 for. lol

Its sad, but they are toast, and with them, the dividend to the city each year which will shrink and then stop completely in the coming years. Good luck replacing that with a tax increase. People are already maxed out.

I've heard many Bell customers in other parts of Ontario are now claiming to be from Thunder Bay to get that $50 deal (less than 1/2 of what they charge others in Ontario for it). Bell is attacking here to try to clear out TBayTel I suspect.

The only people I know that have any problems with Tbaytel price or reception are the people that don't pay their bills. You can see them scurrying from one kiosk to another in Intercity mall. There must be about 10 of them including all the big monopolies.
