Highways closed because of weather; Highways 102, 71 reopen

Icy conditions continue to plague the region's highways.

Icy conditions continue to plague the region's highways.

On Tuesday Ontario Provincial Police announced more weather-related road closures, shutting Highway 17 down to traffic at Terrace Bay to westbound traffic, and eastbound at Rainbow Falls because of water over the roadway near Hays Lake. The road will remain closed indefinitely, police said.

Travellers on Highway 11 can now maneuver between Atikokan and Rainy River, but the highway remains closed between Atikokan and Shabaqua.

Highway 71, which had been closed in both directions for 14 hours, reopened Tuesday morning. Highway 102 between Ignace and Thunder Bay, closed for 17 hours, was also reopened on Tuesday.

Lakehead Public Schools have closed all rural schools due to the ice and snow, and cancelled all rural buses.
