Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives have a new candidate representing the Thunder Bay - Superior North riding.

Derek Parks was acclaimed during a nomination meeting Tuesday. Following his acclamation, Parks said the North as a region needs a stronger voice.

“We need a voice and we need someone to fight for Northerners,” he said during an interview with CKPR Radio. “We can’t be the doormat for the premier’s office … I think we’re really missing opportunities to develop jobs to bring a booming economy back to the North.”

Parks also made it clear that he would splitting his time between this area and his home in southern Ontario.

Oh really, his home is in Southern Ontario. Get lost Derek Parks.

I believe he is from Thunder Bay and has moved to Southern Ontario. Just because he moved does not mean that he doesn't understand or care about the place that he was born and raised. Many young people leave this city for opportunities elsewhere but always seem to return to their roots.

This guy !has no vested interest in our community, Why would anyone in their right mind vote for hi?. Resident full time or not at all. How can we think he will truly have our best interest at heart.

Just my opinion....

Drive the Conservatives out of town. The PC's plans to enslave us for lesser minimum wage is appalling, and their plans to completely destroy the ODSP [Ontario Disability Support Program] is borderlined Criminal. They will never, ever get my vote.

They had Tamara Ward Johnston but did have the gonads to stand behind her.

DESPERADO! The PC's should think long-term and save the money on signs and campaign ads for the next election. Why bother running a candidate like this, especially after the last debacle ?

Thunder Bay is a welfare town, it will never vote PC anyway.

PCs are for hard working people who want to have the freedom to look after themselves and prosper through the free market system that's worked so well in the US and Canada.

that's not what Thunder Bay wants at all. We want handouts! and we want them now!

Why didn't you run?

I am sorry, but for me personally, a prerequisite of any candidate running in my community, regardless of what party they are representing, is that they actually live in this area full time.

I am very much a believer that someone who experiences life on a day-to-day basis in the area they are trying to represent is more responsive to the needs and concerns of that area versus someone who is physically detached from the area.

I give every political party a fair chance to obtain my vote, but I do not think I can in this instance as this candidate does not even meet the bare minimum criteria (in my opinion) of someone who should be eligible to run for this area.

What an arrogant and insulting move by the conservative party. They would have been smarter not running a candidate at all. By nominating someone who does not even live here they are showing just how little respect they have for the citizens of Thunder Bay and the North.

I recall in the last election, Mr. Hudak claiming to care about the north but he parachutes someone in from Toronto to run in Thunder Bay. That is what Mr. Hudak offers the north. Mr. Hudak is the same man who moved jobs from Thunder Bay to southern Ontario. The difficult part for me is that I often vote Conservative at least federally but since Mr. Hudak has gotten the title, I cannot bring myself to go there.

The NDP would never be on my radar. Watching them over the past few years I get the impression that they sit around on their hands waiting for the Conservatives or Liberals to take a position and then they come out with their platform. And Federally they just got slapped using tax dollars to support their political activities.

Back to this article, this is rather insulting and I believe it sends a clear message to us just how much the North is valued by the PC party.

parachute candidates are nothing new.

the whole "orange wave" in Quebec was parachute candidates and they now sit in the Commons. They wont be sitting for long as Quebec will go back liberal. not that it matters anyway.

partys know where its best to spend their money and resources and as I said, Thunder Bay is welfare central. It will never vote PC because its a handout town. PCs don't give handouts to the lazy and uninspired.

Thunder Bay better enjoy all that liberal buyouts they got because the election will probably be the end of it.. as well as any further promises of vote buying.

Good ol' conservative logic right here. "They do wrong, so we can do wrong too!"

We're only after handouts up here because the Mike Harris government destroyed any hope of having a thriving local economy back in the 1990s. They cancelled our freeway, they closed our hospitals, they closed our schools, they downloaded responsibilities to municipalities which raised our property taxes while not lowering provincial taxes, and they reduced our voice in Queens Park by reducing the number of ridings in the North from 15 to 9.

All you do here is complain about the left. Doesn't the PC party have something good to offer? Or are insults all they've got?

Not a fan of flown in candidates, but I do have a bit of a stake in it as I might be running for the Green Party. I was raised in Cambridge, but moved up here and plan to stay here from now on (my wife is from Atikokan and wanted to move back up here for years).

To my thinking, if you don't live in a riding you shouldn't be allowed to run in it. Same for city councillors needing to live in the ward they represent, mayors needing to live in the city, etc. If you move during a term, so be it, but then you must run wherever you now live.
