Council calling on CBC to stop cuts to its local station

By Jamie Smith, tbnewswatch.com

City council unanimously supported the local CBC station Monday night.

The public broadcaster announced deep cuts last week, including the loss of two staff and the afternoon show Voyage North in Thunder Bay.

Current River Coun. Andrew Foulds said the cuts would mean the region would lose part of its cultural fabric. He said council and the public need to rally similar to a campaign in 2009 in order to save the staff positions and the afternoon show.

"It's very serious and it is happening very quickly," Foulds said.

The city is calling on the CBC to cancel all programming and staff cuts Thunder Bay and that a copy of the resolution be sent to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the Canadian Heritage ministry and other regional politicians and organizations.

A council who doesn't practice responsible spending spouting off to another organization. Not unheard of, but I'm sure that Mr Harper and his band of associates (..criminals) will put that request right on top of their to do list.

I usually identify myself on the right side of the spectrum. I'm somewhat young at 37 and realize I am pretty unusual amongst my peers in my political beliefs, yet I rarely miss an episode of As It Happens or The Current. Both are absolutely excellent programs and no matter what political stripe you are these shows are just great. I have always found cbc to be the radio for intelligent people.

@ musicferret..Unfortunately, we will have many more cuts in all areas as Harper and whoever forms the next provincial govts. attempt to get back in the black.
So in your mind is getting back in to the black such a bad thing to do, or are you one of the Liberal "let's blow it all type of guys"

I would like to know why I am paying for SUN tv on my cable. The last thing I want to watch is that. How do I get rid of that channel I thought we were going to have options on the cable channels. Wasn't that what Harper promised?

because youre paying for it.

you can cancel at anytime and save some money.

however you cannot cancel your payments to the cbc. nobody can.

Hows that for a free country?

Maybe one of our other radio stations can use the oppurtunity.Create an interesting afternoon talk program that deals with local issues.Create some buzz about the new event center,Jets hockey francise.Thunder Bay needs at least one radio station that informs and educates.

great idea! Its a great opportunity and I like the way you think. Instead of crying for government to pay for everything, you saw opportunity for private industry to fill a market, and that's a welcome change. If those 2 jobs got replaced with privately enterprise positions instead of socialist ones, we will be on the road to success and improvement.

Why don't all the people whining about this start their own station and pay for it themselves? They seem to love it so much and claim its so important, but yet none of them will pony up the cash themselves or will lift a finger to do a single thing about it.

Might be an opportunity for LU Radio. Win win. The programming, albeit may be a bit different, can remain local, while at the same time provide programming to them that may increase listenership.

I enjoy the morning and afternoon show. Sad to see the afternoon one be canceled, but I don't think it is a 'keep at all costs' scenario. The CBC looses money in a very competitive broadcast world. I agree with some funding, but they should be able to make it on their own. If the CPC lose the next election, does anyone really think the Libs will put more money in to the CBC? I highly doubt it.

2 less taxpayers for council to scam money off of.

Anyway, so council is going to send a letter to the federal government regarding the cuts to cbc.
Harper hates the cbc and the letter will simply go into the shredder.

Give me a break. Lol.

YellowSnow13 says:
If you think the CBC is not biased just like the every other media out there then think again. Just have an opposing opinion about anything and see what it gets you on CBC. It's time for them to go. What does Foulds have to do with the CBC? 2 jobs are lost and he's all up there defending them. Come on! It's 2 jobs and that's it. Don't read more into it. This council is really a bad joke! When is that next election?

This council has not found a cause that they are not will to spend our money on.
We have other fine radio station that have way more listener than CBC.
In the USA the have PBS, great radio and not fund by taxes but by the people who listen to it This why it reflects their communities.

Another bunch of bunk by a bunch of people that simply dont have a clue. Cut a check and put your money where ur mouth is if you really want the 2 afternoon positions to be maintained. How many extra city staff do you guys plan on hiring this year. Perhaps you cancel the hiring of sons and daughters of employees into summer positions and transfer this money to supporting the CBC. The proposed letter is just a plain stupid exercise in futility.

S Duncan says:
I don't want my municipal tax dollars funding some left wing propaganda radio station now.

Its bad enough my tax dollars already pay for it in the first place, I don't want more of my money going to some welfare radio.

Every other radio station manages to pay their own bills, why cannot this one?
4/15/2014 9:24:19 AM
dynamiter says:
There is nothing wrong with having a local public broadcasting radio. They bring good content and provide a service that may not be available on business radio network. I usually agree with your comments on this site but going off and calling a radio station left or right wing or welfare is kind of over the top. PBS has its place in the world and has value and you should recognize that. Now CBC ( especially the news network side) has been very anti Conservative since their budget has been slashed in the past few budgets and they have been non stop criticizing everything that the Cons have done whether it was in their control or not. Which makes me glad to see the corporation's funding being further slashed. I also agree that it is CBC staff in TO that has cut the local jobs. But I also believe that especially in northern communities a local public broadcaster serves the community well and some public funds are well spent.
4/15/2014 9:46:12 AM
S Duncan says:
I have not a bad word to say about PBS in the USA.

They respond to the views of those that support it. CBC is close, except its been managed by too many unelected bureaucrats that are loyal to the liberals who gave them their positions and budgets.

It will take decades of a Conservative majority government to weed out all these bureaucracies which are consuming our dollars at a disturbing rate. Look at the recent experimental lakes nonsense. The feds defund it, and look at the crying that ensues!

The CBC and its biases need to be defunded. I don't want it to go away, I want it to fund itself. If it can float its own boat, then great. Every other radio stations manage to keep their own heads above water, why cant they?

I do value the differing opinions offered but I don't think I need to pay for the left wing to just attempt to socially engineer public thought using my tax dollars. We have enough of that already.
4/15/2014 11:24:28 AM
fastball says:
Public television in America is sponsored indirectly by the US Government, through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting - in 2010 PBS rec'd about 75M dollars from a 425M pie going to public broadcasting.
I don't detect a lefty-leaning, pro-welfare stance from PBS - unless you call all that science and history and arts the "social engineering of public thought".

CPC and their silencing of our public broadcaster.. soon there will be only corporate owned media left. You want biased opinions then don't complain but I prefer CBC.
4/14/2014 9:17:18 PM

these cuts have nothing to do with the CPC.

they are the result of CBC higher ups cutting the budget because they lost Hockey night in Canada.

if you're going to blame the CPC, at least pick something that applies. don't make stuff up.

Unfortunately, we will have many more cuts in all areas as Harper and whoever forms the next provincial govts. attempt to get back in the black.

Councillor Foulds should stop and think for a second once in awhile, and ask himself..

...if its truly a cultural fabric, then it doesn't need any radio station to broadcast it. If its truly a cultural fabric, it doesn't need tax payers dollars to exist. and if its truly a cultural fabric, why is the municipal government sticking its beak into something that is none of its business?

Foulds needs to smarten up. He just knows its left wing propaganda and he wants all the back up he can muster.
