Fort Frances puts casino on October ballot

By tbnewswatch.com

When Fort Frances residents go to the municipal election polls in October, they’ll also be voting on whether or not to licence a casino in their town.

On Monday, Town Council voted unanimously to hold the plebiscite, with the results binding for the next two terms.

If more than 50 per cent of Fort Frances residents support the idea, the municipality will approach the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation to request consideration as a casino site.

During the 1997 wave that saw a casino built in Thunder Bay, a similar plebiscite was voted down in Fort Frances.

But Mayor Roy Avis says the time has come to test the waters once more.

The OLG selected Kenora and one of its neighbouring First Nations as a potential gaming site last year.

Kenora City Council passed a resolution that any casino would not be built downtown and would need to be part of a new hotel and convention centre.
