Plans for Atikokan arena slowed down

ATIKOKAN, Ont. -- The plans for a new arena in Atikokan have hit a roadblock.

A lack of federal and provincial funding partners has resulted in construction the municipality was hoping to start this summer being halted.

It is estimated the town of 3,000 would be looking at a bill of nearly $5 million to repair aging pipes, expand the ice surface and build dressing rooms.

Mayor Dennis Brown says the arena is an economical and social pillar of the town.

“That’s the hub of activity in the winter time,” Brown told TBT News. “We have to have an arena.”
