Tbaytel Internet restored after 15-hour outage

THUNDER BAY -- A 15-hour, citywide Internet outage appears to be over.

Tbaytel officials confirmed that much of its services had been restored just after 2 a.m. Wednesday. The outage, which seemed to impact users randomly across Thunder Bay, surfaced Tuesday morning.

The issue is being blamed on what Tbaytel calls “a significant increase in network traffic” that resulted in a capacity issue.

That led to a malfunction in various components that manage network traffic.

The affected components were replaced and reconfigured overnight.

Tbaytel says it will continue to monitor its systems to ensure stability, but adds that traffic is now being processed without issues.

Business customers still experiencing issues are asked to report the trouble to technical support for further investigation by calling 623-4400.

Ahhh spoken like a true hipocrite! Complain about everything local including council and the event centre and how to fix it and better support it AND support companies that do add value to the local tax base or economy.

Ps shaw cable tv is expensive and sucks. I had it. Got tired of the poor quality nd constant price increases and gouging

Because some of us would rather deal with little hiccups rather than Shaw's prolonged outages.

Let me see, in 2009 Shaw's home phone and internet services went down for customers in Thunder Bay and Winnipeg for almost a week. Shaw offered no reason for the outages.

Then in 2011 a switch failed at data centre in BC and took out home phone for all Shaw customers for more than 48 hours.

Next up was an explosion and fire at Shaw main office in Calgary which took out home phone and internet services to all their customers for more than 36 hours.

Shaw's primary and backup systems where both housed in the same building and when the sprinkler system kicked in, it took both systems down.

The have also been numerous localized outages as well over the years.

You can also follow Shaw's outages at this website -

I remember the 2009 Shaw phone outage. It was 48 hours or less and they credited me for ALL MY SERVICES that month, not just phone, but cable, internet etc.. Again, good customer service. TBayTel 's downfall is customer service, plain and simple. Their mode of operation is to deny it exists until enough people complain and then they simply say oops and tell you to suck it up. I've only lost phone service in TBay with Shaw once. The explosion you mention in Calgary only affected those in the area and I'm sorry but that's an acceptable excuse. They have excellent redundancy setup throughout Canada.

I used TBayTel for years, but when you get treated like crap over and over you tend to loose faith in the company. I've dealt with them from both a residentail and business aspect and the service is poor.

Perhaps they should stop kissing the cities butt with a yearly cheque, take that money, invest it in the infrastructure and maybe they would get some customers back (not this one).

Sounds like more than 99.9% uptime you mentioned in the other thread.
There was not denial here. They were upfront even during the outage; both with the media and on their Facebook site.

That paycheque keeps your taxes lower than they are.

Very lame excuse IMO.

this is the first hiccup in the year we've been with tbaytel at our new house. Our digital cable signal is first rate and I average about 1mps dl speeds which is more than enough. (this is with one of the cheaper cheaper bandwidth options)

Lots of people can't wait to complain, but I've been happy with my service.

I had shaw for about 12yrs and they were gauging me constantly. It did not drop often but even with the broadband 100 package which might i add was ridiculously overpriced and in 2013 i had two price increases withing 5 months. Sure, cable can be more dependable but when it is provided by a group of thieves that use the crtc to fuel their greed I will stick with my tbaytel tv and interne which i now have had for 6months and love it. My internet has never gone down once till yesterday. They are very very affordable and customer service is great and they treat their customers like they matter. Tbaytel also contributes to our local economy and pay out millions yearly to the city of thunder bay. I fully support them and if people wish to bash them they are just too selfish and impatient.

tsb says:
TBayTel is the less expensive option, so naturally you're going to get what you pay for.

Aside from Shaw's technicians knocking the phone lines off of my building "accidentally" while installing services for the other tenants, and poor speeds due to antiquated wiring and equipment in my building (there is no dedicated DSL line, we use a splitter), I haven't really had any problems. When we had Cable TV, it would get knocked out during windstorms because again, their line technicians do not know what they're doing.

bla bla bal...Big deal. So your internet was out for a few hours. Get off your chair and visit the family in your house for a change.

It's funny that when the power goes out for the same time no one is up in arms threatening to sign up with an independent power utility. But for some reason cell service and internet seem to be a birth right for some people.

Last year Google was down for almost a day. Did you leave Google? Probably not...because there isn't a public presence to complain to. When a train derailment caused a huge outage local residents were sympathetic.
Quit your whining. Something broke, they worked through the night and they fixed it. Move on.

Today's business world runs on immediate response to customer/client inquiries. Our company annoyed many clients that day with Tbaytel's bungle. Obviously personal internet is not a big concern but when the bigger companies in Thunder Bay have everything tied to Tbaytel and it goes down for that long it is a disaster. It was a "big deal" for our company and others just as if the power was interrupted. Service interruptions due to weather are understandable, those due to poor planning or cheap equipment are not.

Tired of the critics on News Watch says:
I find it ironic that there were internet outages by Shaw this week YET not a peep from media or the complainers on here. Only hear the nay Sayers when there is an incident. Tbaytel is a great local company with solid products. Stuff happens. Even happens to Shaw and Bell. But the nay Sayers on here Never bitch. Why because it's not news! Tbaytel prices and products are competitive. They contribute more to community and it's a profitable company paying a dividend to city! Oh and for the shaw lover talking about shaw go wifi. News flash it's not free and open to all. There are a lot of tbaytel hotspots in the city. All free and open to all. A little bit if balanced reporting and comments But doubt that will ever happen. The naysayers wouldn't be able to be arm chair know it alls!

Dan Dan says:
The "Shaw outages" were caused by Tbaytel's failed equipment, not anything wrong with the Shaw network.

And seriously, a "significant increase in traffic"? That doesn't cause a sudden stop like that. They're not telling the truth.

tbay1983 says:
Anyone who says Shaw never has internet trouble has ZERO credibility.

Why is this even news? It wasn't a complete outage? Just like the article from the other week about 12 rural houses who can't get TBayTel internet. Why is Shaw never responsible for providing service. Why are their outages never reported? It honestly seems like this website is out for TBayTel. Another thing is it's the same people complaining about TBayTel that complain about everything else on this website. You want something to complain about it? Just wait until there is no TBayTel and you have no choice except Bell or Shaw and have to speak to someone at a call center in South America. Oh yeah don't forget about and your taxes go up along with all the lost jobs and property devaluation . Then you'll really have something complain about.

I'm not a fan of tbaytel but I can say shaw is horrible; at any rate tbaytel wasn't the only one that was down. Most of the GTA and all through the USA was having massive problems from April 21-22. It was a bandwidth problem, that's why some sites would work and others wouldn't at all. Also, Shaw wasn't working well any better then Tbaytel on the 22nd so knock off the crap and google "Internet Problems April 22 2014".

The interwebz was really weird for about twelve hours, for me, anyway, and then everything was OK again.
You people who are arguing about whether Shaw or Tbaytel is better...Good grief! They are the same!
I must point out, however, that TbayTel belongs to us all, and a huge whack of its profits come back to our community.

mystified says:
The only people who should be complaining about the outage is those running a business.
All you armchair Cisco certified IT people need to stop assuming you know the reason for everything. Nasa has equipment failures as do other entities that are larger than tbaytel and Shaw put together.
The internet isn't a life support system so stop your chronic complaining.

I thinks its time for more of the Tazpayers money to be used for a major Service Rebate from Tbay Tel. I think everyone thats a Tbay Tel customer deserves another 200.00 Intercity Gift Card for supporting Tbay Tel. Their service is just so awesome. Free digital PVR's for everyone, except Shaw customers who have to Pay for theirs to watch TV. Just think the 200.00 Free gift card is supporting local business at Inter City Mall. Maybe we can all sign up for Koodo,Virgin,Telus or Bell cellular which is Cheaper (but only in Tbay). Tbay Tel is setting itself up for sale to highest bidder. How soon everyone forgets about the 10 million they just borrowed from the city. Asset's depreciate, its more of a liability. Oh wait Tbay Tel Internet cost went up 5.00 month last year people, higher than inflation. Time for another price increase to pay for the network upgrades needed. Got to recover all the promotional cost giveaways to the loyal customers. Its run just like the city of Tbay.

So move, the positive people in Tbay don't care for your negative attitude. Move to one of the city's you think is so much better and let us know in a few years how that went. Don't drag us down into your mental cesspool of negativity.

Great posts from all!
I had Shaw approx. 8 years back. Although petty (maybe to some), I did not feel the need to be billed for 2 months of service (one for current use and another for future service - aka advanced billing). I did enquire and Shaw stated that this was allowed. When my service was interrupted for a day or two, I prorated my bill and adjusted it accordingly. I paid my bills only after the service was provided, incurring late fees. It went to collection and I laughed in their face. I told them to discontinue my service.
Here is a scenario for you. I go to the grocery store and give the cashier $200 and say “I’ll be back next month to retrieve my groceries. Again, petty but there is a principal.
My point is this, Tbaytel has excellent service with courteous, knowledgeable and professional employees and no advanced billing. Financial contributions back to the community aside, they will never lose me as a customer.
P.S. For those of you who say “what about insurance companies – having to pay for a policy, in full, for a year’s protection”. There are more stringent laws protection us from them then there are from cable companies. I have fought thru both.
