THUNDER BAY -- A 28-year-old man charged in the Highway 61 crashed that killed two people has been denied bail.

A judge ordered the detention of Tyler Boily at the Thunder Bay Courthouse Monday morning, citing a concern for public safety if he was released.

Boily was charged with impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death after a crash that claimed the lives of Daniel Brooks and Michelle Parker, both 28, last month.

It's alleged that a man driving a pickup truck south on Highway 61 in the early morning hours of March 22 struck a guard rail. The truck then collided with the car of the victims, which was travelling northbound.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue had to extract people from both vehicles.

Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene. Parker was taken to hospital where she was pronounced later.

Boily was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Boily was remanded until May 20.

None of the charges against the accused have been tested in court.
