A complaint of illegal hunting has led to a Vanastra, Ont. man being fined $3,000 for unlawfully targeting moose.
Wayne Riley was found guilty in court and fined $1,500 for hunting moose without a licence, $1,000 for discharging a firearm from a vehicle and $500 for making a false statement to a conservation officer. In addition to the fines he’s been banned from hunting in Ontario for a year.
The incident took place on Dec. 12, 2012 near Hidden Lake, southeast of Upsala.
Conservation officers, with the assistance of the OPP and the Ministry of Natural Resource’s canine unit, discovered Riley had illegally shot a cow moose and bull moose from his truck, MNR officials said in a release.
The hunting party he was with only had validation tags for a bull moose. Riley’s rifle and the cow moose were seized and forfeited to the Crown.
His case was heard in court on April 2.
