Tamara Johnson is now a Libertarian Party candidate for Thunder Bay-Superior North.
By Jamie Smith, tbnewswatch.com

Tamara Johnson is back as a candidate in Thunder Bay-Superior North.

Johnson was ousted as a candidate for the Progressive Conservatives party in February after standing by controversial statements she made about First Nations businesses having unfair tax breaks that hurt other businesses in the area.

Now as a Libertarian Party candidate, which she said reached out to her, she is standing by her statements.

"I think we have a severe unfairness happening in Ontario," she said.

Johnson said the party is virtually unknown but doesn't suppress speech and she agrees with the Libertarian message.

She's not sure if she will be invited to debates, but said she would attend if offered.

Jason Lavallee originally decided not to run for the Libertarians in Thunder Bay-Atikokan but after a discussion with the party he will take the nomination.

Anybody else have an issue with the fact that's he denied making these statements initially, deleted them from her facebook and now that she is running again she "stands by the statements"?

Read her facebook comments and you will see what she is about. The content that is posted and presented on her Facebook page does not present a good candicate for anything.

Yes I agree, Tamara should be running for mayor of Thunder Bay. Atleast we would hear about whats going on and not what they want you to hear. Way to go Tamara, I'm voting for you!

You have made very rude and ignorant comments about Tamara Johnson and other posters on this board.
You have been called out to back it up with facts. This is not the CBC where you get a free pass. Hopefully there is more substance to be added to your post than this angry outburst of intolerance that has become the standard response of the liberal/ leftie/progressive when confronted with another point of view.

Ms. Johnson shows an amazingly narrow, short sighted and grossly uninformed opinion about Treaty rights and aboriginal history through her statements which led to her being kicked out of the PC candidacy. This is the good news. The bad news is that there are equally narrow minded, short sighted and grossly misinformed people posting on this message board in her support. Standing up for what you believe is right is admirable, except when what you believe is right is so fundamentally wrong...

It's too bad she didn't run in the Thunder Bay Atikokan riding. I have a lot of respect for Michael Gravelle but unfortunately not for his counterpart. She would of had a lot better chance of winning her seat and upsetting the incumbent. She may have a tough time against Mr. Gravelle.

Too bad, she will have absolutely no chance at winning this way. She would have done better as a City council member and I would have happily voted for her.

I was going to sit this (election) one out but thanks to a gutsy woman I will be casting my vote for Tamara. I was thoroughly disgusted by the Conservative party for "dumping" Tamara because she had the "guts" to say what needs to be said.

Tamara has more kahuna's than any "local" politician I know.

Thanks Tamara.

My prediction is, enough right wingers will vote for her that the PC vote will be reduced to the point that they come in 4th, after the greens. There is no way more than 200 people will vote for a party they've never heard of. Unless she knocks on every single door and hand-delivers every person a copy of her party's platform (keeping in mind that, like, 80% of this riding is left-wing), she isn't going to get much support at all.

Her financial statement is going to be really easy to fill out though, since no one will be donating more than $100 to her!

Given that 51 Libertarian candidates provincially generated a total of 19000 votes in the 2011 election, with the best result garnering 2.6% of the popular vote in a single riding, Johnson's entry isn't much of a threat to change the race.

Johnson can probably be about as effective with her "tax breaks" discussion by posting here or writing a letter to the editor.

hotchoc says:
dillon, she mentioned the competitive advantage some businesses have over another. Exactly who are you saying is the poor disadvantaged group. I hope you do not mean the gas bars located on the reserve. They are likely some of the wealthiest people in the region. Do they still need that competitive advantage to thrive?

I do not know this lady at all.

I do know that any society that is ill-equiped to at least discuss the issues, is one ultimately doomed to dissolve into mediocrity and hatred.

I do not believe you can fix horrible treatment by treating people differently.

But again, when you refuse to discuss the points this lady made, you say more about the lack of character of those who kicked her out and played politics with her.

She obtained the right to run, but the Tories ran scared because she was willing to speak out.

What does that say about the Tory leader.
5/5/2014 6:03:31 PM
Dillon says:
I would quibble with your assertion that they're some of the wealthiest in the region, but I don't really know. Even if they are, you can't change treaties just because of two gas bars in Thunder Bay. It doesn't matter whether those specific businesses need it.

Besides, our society is starting to talk about these big issues. The education bill, for example. She is thinking small picture, when there are bigger factors at play. These things don't happen all at once. You talk about hatred, and she's throwing around accusations of illegal practices without any proof, and all of her public comments including regular Facebook posts, are about how terrible natives are.

You go girl.
I like the way you tell it. Those Three Stooges involved in the other parties don't have any guts to say it the way it is and only like the photo ops. It sure didn't take the lying liberals long to come up with some cash for the ROF when they knew the budget would get shot down. Buying votes and blowing tax dollars is all the are good at.
If you don't get in on this election, run for mayor and help this town get it's head above water.

I misread the Libertarian for liberal. I apologized for the mistake.
I admit I do not know much about that party only heard the name a couple times.
It is not up to the writer to tell people to not thumbs up them. Maybe they agree with me saying she switched her party even if she was told she couldn't run for the conservatives pretty fast. So she could not have been as committed as the riding people thought.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but don't jump all over them because more people seem to agree with them than agree with you.

dillon says:
Always respect anyone who is brave enough to run for office, but she's obviously out of her depth, no matter whether you agree with her or not. First in was her incredible tone-deafness of blaming her friends' loss of business on the small perceived advantage afforded our poorest (by far) demographic, when large corporations are afforded massive incentives and are pushing out small businesses everywhere. Your local family-run hardware store didn't go out of business because of a couple gas stations on the reserve.
Second, she complains about a POLITICAL PARTY playing "politics". (her word).
Third, her complete lack of understanding as to how the treaties work.
Fourth, her continued tired whine that politicians aren't listening to her on this issue. Gee Tamara, I wonder why they're not falling all over themselves to eliminate this tiny perceived advantage given to our poorest and historically most marginalized segment of the population. She's not who I'd want fighting my battles.

She didn't switch. She was removed from the PC party due to what some considered inappropriate comments made on social media. She wants to run for office and running as an independent is next to impossible. I don't blame her for making that choice. Just like I don't blame Hyer for going to the Greens when he left the NDP.

That is quite a switch. Conservative values switched to Liberal ones.
I don't think she was a true Conservative if she can just merrily switch to a tax and spend government especially since the Conservatives are definitely not tax and spend.
I still will not vote Liberal even if I liked her. She speaks without thinking first. At least that is my impression of her.

I don't think she speaks without thinking. She's just not afraid to ask the hard questions & ruffle feathers. She's willing to step into the cross-hairs on issues almost every other politician ignores and lets continue to fester endlessly. Whether you agree with her positions or not I'm personally impressed to see a politician actually try to address sensitive issues. Too often politician say a lot of nothing while walking the middle road never picking a side of the fence... never saying anything that might actually bring to light issues that slid by due to overly politically correct agendas and fear of backlash. More politicians should be like her, not afraid to say what's on the minds of the people.

True conservatism is much closer to libertarian than the Liberal party ever was.

The Liberal party is one of control and dependency. They like people to be dependent on them and are masters at convincincing the public how much they "need" them.

Fiscal conservatism: yes
Social conservatism: no

Say what you want about the Libertarian Party, at least they're consistent: small government. Not small government when it comes to social services but big government when it comes to who you can marry or what herbs you can put a lighter to.

don't worry "pc" no one expects you to vote for anyone else. Rather than rationally analyze each campaign and base your decision on what you would feel is best for the province / area you blindly follow the PC party like the rest of their idiot core supporters. You can only hope it was! It takes a normal functioning human being about 8 seconds of reading her and her cohorts' thoughts on Facebook to realize just what this candidate is truly all about. Stopping at the obvious that should be easily derived from that public information, I'll simply say that ms. Johnson would never be my candidate of choice under any circumstance. The content that is posted and presented on her Facebook page as fact based reality is so skewed and vulgar that I'm surprised even the libertarians would accept it. Free speech is rarely free. We all eventually pay for the things we say!
