Legion Branch 6 to turn in its charter

THUNDER BAY -- The executive of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 has made the decision to turn in its charter.

The decision follows years of declining membership. Branch 6 president Jim Ash says its roll-call is now down to about 100 members.

“Ten years ago, for financial reasons, we ended up closing our bar and restaurant,” Ash said during an interview with CKPR Radio Wednesday morning.

“So we’ve been operating as a club for members, providing member services for the last 10 years.  We’ve been operating for those last 10 years on the money we generated from the sale of our building, so it’s coming to an end.”

Ash adds that members are being encouraged to transfer to other Legion branches.

The charter closure is to occur at the end of September.

Sad but a sign of the times i guess. Not many heroes of those times remaining and not as many from recent times to make all the legions viable. Hopefully the other branches can stay functional with this move.
