THUNDER BAY -- A cyclist seriously injured following a crash with a car blew a stop sign before turning into oncoming traffic, police say.

Thunder Bay Police Service officials provided an update into a June 3 afternoon collision that took place on Memorial Avenue and Dunlop Street.

Police say the 17-year-old cyclist was headed east on Dunlop Street approaching Memorial avenue. The teen was wearing ear buds at the time and riding hands free as he approached the intersection.

The cyclist was struck by a vehicle heading south on Memorial Avenue after the cyclist entered the intersection.

The teen was taken to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre via an ambulance where he was treated for serious injuries.

He remains in the hospital in stable condition.

The driver of the vehicle was unharmed, but his car did sustain significant damage from the crash.

The investigation continues and charges are pending.
