THUNDER BAY -- Three people are dead following an early morning highway crash, OPP officials have confirmed.
The crash between two tractor trailers on Highway 11/17, about 50 kilometres east of the city, has led to the closure of a section of the Trans-Canada Highway.
The closure originally affected traffic in both directions, but the OPP did announce the opening of a single lane shortly after 10 a.m.
Police at the scene told a TBT News reporter that a transport truck heading east collided with a commercial vehicle heading west just after 12:40 a.m.
The only occupant of the transport truck and the two occupants of the commercial vehicle died as a result of the crash.
Originally, police confirmed that two people had died as a result of the crash. A third victim was confirmed by investigators just before 11 a.m.
It is unknown how long the highway may be closed for.
This is a developing story. More information will be published as it becomes available.
