THUNDER BAY -- The city’s police service is restructuring how its courthouse operations are being managed.
The Thunder Bay Police Service will place its Court Services division under the Corporate Services umbrella to try to increase efficiency. One of the most significant differences will be having the division overseen by a staff sergeant, rather than a higher ranking inspector.
“This is another of trying to find efficiencies, especially when it comes to reporting lines. We’re trying to structure all the branches the same so they have one inspector, at least one staff sergeant and any number of sergeants,” Levesque said after the monthly police services board meeting, which was held on Tuesday at the Oliver Paipoonge Community Centre.
Prior to the construction of the new amalgamated Thunder Bay Courthouse, Court Services had been previously been attached to Corporate Services.
The division given an increased priority to help with the transition to the new courthouse.
Levesque said having the higher rank at the new facility was an asset during the planning and construction stages, providing input in the police’s space. It was also helpful during the first couple of months of the courthouse being open.
The switch will not result in any position losses, as they had already cut an inspector during the 2014 budget.
