New taxi bylaw could be ready in few months: McKinnon

THUNDER BAY - The new framework to govern the city’s taxicab industry might come together by the end of the summer.

Coun. Brian McKinnon, who is chairing a committee looking at various taxi-related issues, said they will look at creating a new bylaw within the next few months.

Earlier this year city council approved shifting the responsibility for overseeing the industry from the police services board to the city. That means the bylaw will have to be completely overhauled.

“We can’t make any decisions until we actually have a new bylaw,” McKinnon said after providing a verbal update to the police services board on Tuesday.

“We have to get that step done initially and then we can start making some specific decisions with our partners.”

McKinnon said they will start by examining close to half a dozen different examples from other municipalities to determine how to draft the new one.

One change that he says is “definitely on the table” is creating a single dispatch system that would service all of the companies.
Once a new bylaw is drafted it would have to be approved by city council.

Thunder Bay is one of the last municipalities in Ontario to put the responsibility for supervising the taxi industry on the city.
