CTV is returning to Thunder Bay Television.

Dougall Media vice-president and general manager Don Caron confirmed the company has reached a programming deal to replace CBC on CKPR-TV.

The decision came after CBC announced it was discontinuing affiliation agreements by 2016.

"We had to seek alternative programming," said Caron, adding he decided to be proactive and applied for disaffiliation from the CBC, which had been supplying programming to TBT for 60 years.

The decision was approved by the CRTC on June 11 and as of Sept. 1, 2014, CKPR will offer CTV's full programming slate alongside Global Television on CHFD.

"We will be carrying far superior programming," said Caron. "Of the top 20 shows that are aired, we will carry almost all of them from this point forward."

"So if you want to watch the top programs, you can see them now on either one of our channels," he added.

The switch has been an ongoing process and Caron said it all came together in the last three months.

Good business move for Dougall, but I know many people out there, particularly seniors, who enjoy CBC News programming such as The National and their coverage of Canada Day, Remembrance Day, etc.

Hopefully CBC will broadcast CBC Winnipeg or Toronto here via a repeater, but with their budgetary constraints at the moment, I doubt it.

Why be upset? This was CBC's choice to end the association with CKPR. If anything, replace Global-it's garbage. CBC needs to be the one spoken to as to why the contract has been ended. If CBC really is concerned for it's viewers, they would still be on TBay TV. Maybe the owners of TBay TV should step up and help the local and area viewers.

I'm sorry if I offended colleages in your building with comments about the state of local broadcasting. I was only trying out point out the reality.

But here's the real reality. The shift in viewership is already here. You can bury your head in the sand the same way record companies in 90's did when Napster came out or be proactive and adapt to the shift.

Blocking comments like these (which btw, did not break your posted guidlines) shows the fear of the enevitable.
