Ian MacRae will take over the reins at Lakehead Public Schools.

MacRae on Tuesday was confirmed as the board’s newest director of education, succeeding the soon-to-retire Cathi Siemieniuk.

“The board is extremely pleased with the appointment of Ian MacRae as Director of Education for Lakehead Public Schools, “ said Deborah Massaro, chairwoman of the Lakehead District School Board, in a release.

“Mr. MacRae brings a wealth of experience with him to the position of Director of Education. Following our recruitment and hiring process, the Board is confident that Ian will ensure that our organization continues to shine, and remains focused on our number one priority – our students.”

McRae, who started his career with the board as a teacher at the now-closed Fort William Collegiate Institute, in 2009 was named superintendent of education.

His focus was high schools, adult and continuing education, labour relations, health and safety and the student success school support initiative.

“The greatest strength of the organization is our people – students, parents, staff, Trustees, and community partners,” MacRae said.

“This strength brings with it an abundance of creativity, determination, and organizational intelligence, and will be the key to shaping the future of Lakehead Public Schools.”

Also on Tuesday the board approved Lakehead District School Board's $130.1-million operating and capital budget for the 2014-15 school year. That's about $2.7 million less than the $132.8-million budget the board submitted for approval a year ago.

The budget must still be approved by the Ministry of Education.
