THUNDER BAY -- Unable to wait on the Ministry of Natural Resources, city police officers were forced to shoot a nuisance bear Wednesday evening.
Officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service responded to three separate bear calls that evening in the area of Oliver Road, between Balmoral Street and Golf Links Road.
The bear returned to the wooded area during the first two incidents.
The third incident, which occurred just before 9 p.m., saw the bear on a property near the intersection of Balmoral Street and Oliver Road.
Police at the scene requested help from the MNR to tranquilize the bear.
Police say the animal was being contained by officers who were waiting for MNR officials, but the behaviour of the bear resulted in officers shooting it.
Police say citizens are encouraged to go to the MNR Bear Wise website for information on how to deal with bear issues.
