THUNDER BAY -- TBT News has learned that the Thunder Bay Shipyard, which was operating under the name of Lakehead Marine Industria, has filed for bankruptcy protection.

Company officials were unable to comment on the situation.

Officials with Ernst and Young, which is handling the bankruptcy proceeding, could not be reached for comment.

But the facility has struggled for several years. While it was still handling some marine repair contracts, much of its attention in recent years was directed at trying to generate outside business for its machine shop.

The workforce at the shipyard, which once numbered in the hundreds, had dropped to just 80 employees.
