Firefighters begin annual smoke alarm awareness program

THUNDER BAY -- Firefighters have begun their seasonal residential visits for smoke alarm awareness.

THUNDER BAY -- Firefighters have begun their seasonal residential visits for smoke alarm awareness.

Members of the Thunder Bay Fire Rescue will be go door-to-door in residential areas of the city as part of its annual smoke alarm public education program. The program started Tuesday and will continue throughout the summer. Firefighters will be visiting homes to ensure fire alarms are up to standard.

A working fire alarm is legally required on every storey of a residence and outside all sleeping areas.

The alarms should be tested every month and replaced if they are more than 10 years old.

Deputy Fire Chief Greg Hankkio says there are still an “unacceptable” number of homes in the city that do not have working fire alarms.
