KENORA, Ont. -- The Experimental Lakes Area near Kenora has some big names on its newly announced board of directors.
The ELA was in danger of closing its doors in 2012 after the federal government announced it would end funding for it. The 40-year-old ecological research station was saved when the province stepped in and negotiated a deal to turn it over to the International Institute for Sustainable Development.
The IISD announced this week the seven members of the ELA's first board of directors.
Among them are Sheila Fraser, who was Canada's auditor general from 2001 until 2011, and Phil Fontaine, who served three terms as National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.
The group toured the facility last month.
IISD officials say they're confident the new board will serve the best interests of the world-class research facility.
