THUNDER BAY -- City police have arrested two of four suspects connected to a vicious Canada Day assault that eventually became a homicide case.

The homicide investigation began after the 52-year-old Christopher Adams succumbed to his injuries at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. He was in the hospital being treated for injuries sustained during an assault and possible robbery on July 1.

Police were said to be looking for four suspects involved in the initial assault, and until Thursday all four suspects were reportedly at large. But Thunder Bay Police Service officials on Thursday afternoon issued a clarification stating that two of the four suspects had been arrested shortly after the attack.

Becky Re-Anna Mamakway, 21, and Carl Spencer Rae, 31, were arrested at 130 May Street by uniform patrol officers.

The assault took place at the nearby intersection May and Donald Streets. Both suspects have been charged with aggravated assault and remain in custody.

Police say the false reports that four suspects were at large was due to a "breakdown in internal communications.”

Two other men, considered by investigators to be persons of interest in this case, are still being sought by police.

The victim has been a city resident for the past three years.

The investigation is ongoing.
