THUNDER BAY -- A man facing a murder charge in what police originally called a violent assault had his case delayed another two weeks.

The 18-year-old accused faces a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of 30-year-old Shannon Ashliegh Marie Hogan. The accused, who cannot be named in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act as the incident took place while he was still a minor, appeared in youth court Thursday at the Thunder Bay Courthouse.

The suspect was 17 at the time of the victim's death and has been remanded until July 31; the judge told the accused that at that time his lawyer, the Crown and a judge would discuss how his case will be handled.

It is expected a date for a preliminary hearing will also be set at that time.

Hogan was killed following an incident in a laneway behind Lake Street in the early morning of July 16, 2013. Thunder Bay Police said she was the victim of a violent assault.

Through their investigation, the Thunder Bay Police Service detectives eventually charged the man, who had been in custody on unrelated charges, in December.

The accused remains in custody.
