MNR sending Ontario firefighters west

THUNDER BAY -- Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources has re-assigned 168 firefighters and personnel to help with fire operations outside of this province.

THUNDER BAY -- Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources has re-assigned 168 firefighters and personnel to help with fire operations outside of this province.

A cool and damp spring throughout much of the province has led to a quiet start to the forest fire season. But it isn’t the same story elsewhere in Canada.

As a result, the MNR has sent 80 of its personnel to help with fire suppression efforts in the Northwest Territories. Another 75 are off to the BC interior with 13 heading to Alberta.

MNR officials say the fire hazard rating for this region is on the rise due to weather, although forest fire activity still remains mostly insignificant.

There are only there active fires in the region right now.
