THUNDER BAY -- City police remain at the scene of where a body was found in the Intercity area Friday night.

Multiple Thunder Bay Police Service vehicles surrounded the grassy area off Field Street on Sunday near a footpath used to connect Fort William Road to 11th Avenue. Yellow crime scene tape continues to block the area and access is restricted.

Police have provided little comment on the incident. It is unknown if the investigation is criminal.

According to a Saturday statement released by police officials, the body of an unidentified male was discovered by fire officials responding to calls of smoke and grassfire.

No further details have been provided as of early Sunday afternoon.

Initial reports from fire officials said crews responded to the area at around 10 p.m. after receiving calls from the public of a possible fire.

Those reports said one person was found suffering from “burn injuries” of a serious nature.

The scene was immediately turned over to police, who on Saturday used a remote control drone to aid in the collection of evidence.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday in Toronto.
