THUNDER BAY -- Police have a man in custody after a brief manhunt near Mountain Road Wednesday.

OPP Sgt. David Moscall said members of the Thunder Bay detachment were conducting a traffic stop on Highway 61 shortly after 11 a.m. The manhunt began after the driver assaulted the police officer before escaping into a nearby wooded area.

The officer sustained minor injuries and was able to continue the pursuit.

Six OPP officers, including a canine officer, joined forces with uniformed and tactical officers from Thunder Bay Police and Anishinabek Polices Services.

Together, police managed to find their suspect after five minutes.

“We got it together fairly quickly and limited his opportunities to escape,” Moscall said.

The man is in custody at the Thunder Bay OPP detachment and the matter is still under active investigation.

“We will complete our investigation and charges will be forthcoming,” Moscall said.

It is unknown why the man fled from police. The man is between the ages of 45 and 50 years old. No other details are known at this time.
