ATIKOKAN, Ont. -- An American canoeist was killed earlier this week after being struck by a tree while in Quetico Provincial Park.

Charles Emerson Showalter, 63 of Wheeling, W.Va died as a result of injuries suffered Tuesday morning after he was struck by a large portion of a tree that was felled by a storm while he was sleeping in his tent. Wheeling was a member of a group that were camping at Point Lake.

Members of the OPP's Northwest Region Emergency Response Team was called and responded with the assistance of a Ministry of Natural Resources helicopter. Livesaving attempts my members of the group were unsuccessful.

An autopsy was conducted in Kenora.
