A nine-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted on Saturday on this block of Cumberland Street.
THUNDER BAY -- City police are looking for a middle-aged man following a report of a northcore sexual assault against a nine-year-old girl.
Officials with the Thunder Bay Police Service say the incident took place on Saturday.
Police say the young girl was waiting outside of a restaurant on Cumberland Street with her bicycle at about 6:30 p.m. The girl was waiting for her mother who went inside the restaurant for a moment.
A man approached the young girl, pushed her into a secluded alcove of the building and began to touch her inappropriately.
The young girl screamed and pushed the man away before running to get her mother.
Police spokeswoman Julie Tilbury said fortunately attacks like this are rare in the city.
"This incident is an isolated incident," Tilbury said. "It's not something that happens on a regular occurence. However, when we do get them we investigate them very seriously and very aggressively and we do believe putting information out to the public will help make parents aware so they can keep their children safe."
Police say the person of interest, who police are in the process of tracking down, is described as a Caucasian man who looks to be about 40 years old. He stands five-feet-10-inches tall and has a thin build.
The man wore a black shirt with a dragon on the front and back, dark pants, a black ball cap and white runners at the time of the assault.
Police believe he is in the area in a silver and gold coloured car.
Witnesses say the man was seen running from the scene of the incident toward Pearl Street.
Police say investigators have identified a person of interest and are now trying to locate him.
