Pretrial set

THUNDER BAY -- The fraud case involving the former chair of the Christmas Cheer Fund is inching closer toward trial.

Linda Gambee had her most recent appearance Tuesday at the Thunder Bay Courthouse, where lawyer Gil Labine set a date for a judicial pretrial hearing.

A judicial pretrial is a private meeting between the Crown, defence attorney and judge to go over the central themes of a possible trial and duration.

Gambee was not present in court.

Gambee was charged in February with fraud over $5,000 and breach of trust after Thunder Bay Police Service investigators allege she defrauded the charitable organization of $22,000.

Police received a complaint in January from the Christmas Cheer Fund, which was then investigated by the Economic Crimes Unit.

Gambee resigned as chair of the Christmas Cheer Fund, a position she had held for six years, last fall. The resignation came after a high-profile dispute with the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition board of directors.

The Christmas Cheer Fund chair position was filled by Joleene Kemp prior to last year’s holiday season.

The hearing is scheduled for Sept. 23.

Charges against the accused have not been proven in court.
