Chief ends hunger strike after positive meeting with provincial minister

The chief of Grassy Narrows First Nation has ended his hunger strike.

The chief of Grassy Narrows First Nation has ended his hunger strike.

Steve Fobister Senior began the hunger strike in protest on Monday, demanding justice and better health care for his people who are suffering from mercury poisoning in their community.

Fobister himself has been diagnosed with the condition.

He ended the protest after what he believed was a positive meeting with Aboriginal Affairs minister David Zimmer in Toronto.

Fobister said he has "flushed the government fox out of his fox hole," and he now wants to live as long as he can to continue the fight for Grassy Narrows.

Premier Kathleen Wynne addressed the issue during her stop in Thunder Bay Wednesday.
